One day after the SAG Award nominations, the Golden Globe nominations were revealed Thursday morning for the 71st annual ceremony. As always, on the television side the Golden Globes embraced a wide variety of new programs, including Netflix originals, a British clone drama, two Showtime dramas, James Spacer and most surprisingly, FOX’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
However, the biggest story might be the snub of Homeland. After winning Best Drama and both lead acting awards for Damian Lewis and Claire Danes, it was completely shut out this year. Instead, the Golden Gloves made way for Netflix’s House of Cards to pick up four nominations while Showtime’s Masters of Sex and Ray Donovan each scored two. Also completely shut out were Game of Thrones, Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire..
There are also acting nominations for newbies James Spader in The Blacklist and Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black. Of the 10 lead acting nominees in the drama categories, seven come from new shows.
For comedies, the usual suspects are nominated (Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, Girls), but a huge surprise comes from Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the freshman FOX comedy which scored nominations for Best Comedy and lead actor for Andy Samberg. Michael J. Fox also picked up a nomination for his new NBC comedy.
Other surprises include a long overdue nomination for Parenthood‘s Monica Potter and a double showdown between Chiwetel Ejiofor and Idris Elba, who are nominated against each other for best actor in a miniseries or TV move and for best dramatic film.
The 71st annual Golden Globes awards air Sunday, January 12 on NBC hosted by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey.
