The nominations for the 87th annual Academy Awards were announced Thursday morning, with Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel topping the list with nine nominations each. Thus year’s ceremony will be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, who appeared in the Oscar-nominated Gone Girl.
Following Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel, which each received nominations for Best Picture and Director, The Imitation Game earned eight nominations while Boyhood and American Sniper each picked up six.
One of the bigger surprises was Bradley Cooper getting nominated for American Sniper, as he hasn’t been up for any major awards all season. This is his third consecutive year being nominated for an Oscar.
Meryl Streep gets her19th Oscar nomination for Into the Woods, extending her already dominant record as the most nominated actress of all time. However, it is only her fourth time nominated as a Supporting Actress, the other 15 times were as a Leading Actress. Her other Supporting nominations were her first two, for The Deer Hunter and Kramer vs. Kramer (she won for the latter) and more recently in 2003 for Adaptation.
Also in the Supporting categories, this is Robert Duvall’s seventh nomination, first being recognized in 1973 for The Godfather. However, The Judge marks his first nomination in more than 15 years. And for Wild, Laura Dern earns her second Oscar nomination, her first coming 23 years ago for Rambling Rose (which also starred Duvall).
Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke, both nominated for Boyhood (as Director and Supporting Actor), were also nominated last year, but as writers for Before Midnight.
Filmmaker Wes Anderson earns his third Writing nomination for The Grand Budapest Hotel (his others were for The Royal Tenenbaums and Moonrise Kingdom), but this is his first time nominated as a director.
Among the more surprising snubs, Selma failed to get nominations for star David Oyelowo or director Ava DuVernay, Foxcatcher is up for five awards, including Best Actor and Best Director, but failed to get in for Best Picture, and The Lego Movie is absent from the Animated Film category.
The Oscars will air Sunday, February 22 on ABC. Here is a full list of all the nominees.
