FOX’s new series, Sleepy Hollow barreled out of the gate to take the lead in ratings for the fall. I fell in love with the show the moment I saw the pilot and here are five reasons why.
The Chemistry of the Two Leads
On the surface, this show could sound a bit trite. Take a character from an old story, dump him into the modern world and then give him a partner from that modern world. It’s your standard fish-out-of-water story, right? Not so much. What sets this show apart immediately is the two leads – Tom Mison as Ichabod Crane, and Nicole Beharie as Abbie Mills. Theirs is a chemistry that begins pretty much from the moment that they are on screen together and I can’t imagine it doing anything but getting better as the show goes on. Personally, I’m not ready to start shipping the two yet, but I can definitely understand fans who will decide to go that route.
It Doesn’t Take Itself Too Seriously
At its core, Sleepy Hollow is based on a story that has been giving adults and children nightmares for centuries. But though there are definitely some creepy and scary moments, the series also doesn’t take itself too seriously. It is fully aware how ridiculous it sounds to have a headless guy running around terrorizing a town in 2013. For every moment that is frightening, there is another that is hilariously funny, and the charm of the show is the fact that it can sometimes get both of those reactions from the same character, or in the same scene.
The Headless Horseman
This one may be personal for me as I have loved the Legend of Sleepy Hollow ever since I saw the Disney version as a kid. I can still remember sitting in front of the TV, transfixed as the exaggeratedly lanky Ichabod in that cartoon rode his exaggeratedly sleepy horse through the woods as the headless horseman loomed near. This series has managed to capture the magical essence of that original story and turn it into a modern tale.
Lots of Mythology
While the series does capture the essence of the original story, it also takes into new and exciting directions not seen in previous incarnations. There is a lot of mystery wrapped up in just how Ichabod and his headless cohort suddenly found themselves in this century. It’s obvious that mystery will be wrapped into a mythology that will make the show unique and I’m very curious to see how all of the characters will be pulled into it as well. It’s the kind of story that begs a ton of questions and I know that I already have a few after just watching the pilot.
Tom Mison is Hot
I’m sorry if that sounds shallow, but it simply must be said. If you (like me) thought you were the kind of person who wouldn’t find someone attractive with long hair, a beard and funny period clothing – think again. Mison manages to make that whole look very sexy and I for one hope that he doesn’t change over to a more modernized one too soon. In addition to the looks though, Mison embodies Ichabod with intelligence, charm, wit and vulnerability that makes the character even sexier.
