The nominations are in for the 72nd annual Golden Globe Awards, and as usual, the Hollywood Foreign Press loves new TV shows. New programs like Amazon’s Transparent, Showtime’s The Affair and even the CW’s Jane the Virgin broke through, supplanting the usual suspects.

However, the most-nominated TV programs are Limited Series. Fargo leads all programs with five nominations (including a promotion for star Allison Tolman, competing as a Lead Actress after being Supporting at every other awards show). HBO’s True Detective has four nominations while, The Affair, The Good Wife, House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, The Normal Heart and Olive Kitteridge all have three nominations.

In the Drama categories, Showtime is well represented with three nominations for freshman series The Affair and two for Ray Donovan. Newcomer Viola Davis also scored a nomination or How to Get Away with Murder.

In the Comedy categories, the CW earned its first two nominations ever with freshman series Jane the Virgin getting in for Best Comedy Series and Lead Actress. In fact, other than Allison Janney for Mom, it’s the only network comedy nominated, with no nominations for shows like Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory or last year’s winner, Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Other newbies include Amazon’s Transparent with two nominations and HBO’s Silicon Valley. In addition, Orange Is the New Black, which was submitted as a Drama last year, earned three nominations as a Comedy.

This year, the Golden Globes also redefined the Miniseries categories as “Limited Series,” which is the reason HBO’s True Detective is competing in those categories and not Drama Series like it does at other awards shows. The debate over what constitutes a Drama and a Miniseries has been big this year with anthology programs like American Horror Story and Fargo competing as Miniseries while True Detective decided to submit as a Drama Series.

For film, the big winner is Birdman with seven nominations while Boyhood and The Imitation Game both have five.

The Golden Globe Awards will air Sunday, January 11 on NBC, once again hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
