Biography

Scarlett Johansson is an award-winning American actress and singer known for her performances in the films The Horse Whisperer, Lost in Translation, A Love Song for Bobby Long and The Other Boleyn Girl.

She was born on November 22, 1984 in New York City.  She began acting as a child, when her mother brought her to auditions.  In 1994, she appeared in her first film, North.  In 1998, she received widespread attention and praise for her performance as injured teenager Grace MacLean in The Horse Whisperer.  She also garnered critical acclaim for her performance in the 2001 cult comedy Ghost World.

In 2003, Johansson appeared in the Sofia Coppola-directed film Lost in Translation, as Charlotte, the wife of a celebrity photographer who finds friendship in an aging movie star (Bill Murray).  The film was a comparable box-office success, thanks to critical acclaim, and she won the Best Actress award from that year’s BAFTA Awards.  She was also nominated for two best actress Golden Globes that year, one for Lost in Translation, and another for the drama Girl with a Pearl Earring.

She earned a third Golden Globe nomination for the 2004 limited-release film A Love Song for Bobby Long.  She also appeared on that year’s In Good Company and The Perfect Score.  In 2005, she appeared opposite Ewan McGregor in the action film The Island, and opposite Brian Cox in the Woody Allen-directed Match Point.  She received a fourth Golden Globe nomination, for Best Supporting Actress.  Johansson collaborated one more time with Allen, in the 2006 film Scoop.

Johansson also appeared in the 2006 thriller The Prestige; the 2007 comedy The Nanny Diaries; and the 2008 film adaptation of The Other Boleyn Girl.  She has just finished shooting her third Woody Allen film, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and is also slated to appear in the Frank Miller adaptation The Spirit.
