Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was the belle of the ball at San Diego Comic Con 2014. After an action-packed finale interest was high to see what the cast and crew has up their sleeves for season two.
While the first season was slow to pick up steam, the second half of the season finally locked into high gear. The finale left viewers with plenty of questions: What will become of Fitz? Will he be the same? Will his love confession complicate the FitzSimmons relationship? What will Agent Coulson do now that he’s in charge? And just what freaky alien language was he writing on the wall?
Unfortunately the stars of ABC’s new hit weren’t spilling too many secrets to reporters at Comic Con. BuddyTV sat down with Clark Gregg, Elizabeth Henstridge, and Iain De Caestecker in an attempt to pry some season two goodies from the gang. Here’s what we found out:
Interview Highlights:
- In season two, Agents of SHIELD are now being hunted in addition to hunting the bad guys.
- Simmons has changed a lot since the end of last season. The relationship with Fitz is obviously strained and fractured. Their relationship is something the show is going to explore more in the second season.
- Everyone is still coming to terms with things from season one, like what happened with Ward.
- What would they like to see for their character in season two? “Just staying alive!” Henstridge says.
- Everything has been burned to the ground, so they hope they can be strong like a Phoenix rising. Their characters both started the first season naive and skittish, yet now they’ve both been through so much. They’ll both continue to grow as characters in season two.
- There will be new alliances within the team.
- Even though there are superheroes, the show is in essence still about these agents who are ordinary people.
We were also lucky enough to sit down with Agent Coulson himself, Clark Gregg. Watch the full video interview and check below for highlights:
Interview Highlights:
- “It’s Director Coulson now right?” “Thank you, it never gets old,” Gregg says.
- Gregg talks about what it was like to read the scripts towards the end of the season.
- Every step along this whole process has been a huge moment for him, from getting cast in his first Marvel movie to becoming director of SHIELD. The scene where Nick Fury explains the protocol was used to resurrect Coulson because he technically is an Avenger left Gregg speechless.
- The days where there would be terrible news for Coulson would emotionally impact Gregg.
- He’s only read the first script for season two. What happened last season suddenly made Coulson hate secrets, even though he’s been keeping them his whole life. Yet the job is bigger than personal loyalties.
- It’ll be interesting to see how much of that hardened Coulson came back to life with the new title. He has to be tough; he’s putting back together an outlaw organization with little resources.
- “It’s going to be brass knuckles, old school like Cold War era-esque espionage. And the people he’s come to trust, Agent Skye, Agent May, Fitz and Simmons, are really going to be challenged.”
- There will also be new agents, like Lucy Lawless, coming to the team and he’s incredibly excited about that.
