Rory Cochrane is back from the dead. Three years after his character was fatally shot in the line of duty on CSI: Miami, the 35-year-old actor returns to the CBS drama to reprise his role as Detective Tim “Speed” Speedle for an unspecified number of episodes this year.
“He will be reprising the role of Tim Speedle and it’s not a flashback,” a CBS spokesperson told E! News. “He will be interacting with his old partner and friend, Eric Delko [Adam Rodriguez].”
Speedle first appeared in the episode “Cross Jurisdictions” and worked as a trace and impressions expert with the Miami-Dade Crime Lab. He was killed in the episode “Lost Son,” which was the third season premiere when his side arm jammed and was fatally wounded by a suspect.
The character was written out at the request of Cochrane, who wanted to pursue a career in film and reportedly disliked the strenuous shooting schedule for CSI: Miami. However, Cochrane, who hoped a more creative ending, was not satisfied with his character’s unceremonious demise.
“It was lame,” Cochrane told TV Guide after his last episode aired. “He got shot last year because of the same [gun malfunction]. It doesn’t make sense. I mean, Speedle knows all these forensics things, and then he doesn’t clean his gun?”
After his stint on CSI: Miami, he worked on films like Right at Your Door and A Scanner Darkly. He was also cast in the miniseries called The Company, which is set to air on August 5.
Although there is no word yet on how Cochrane’s character will be resurrected, speculations have emerged for the possibility of a fake death, witness protection, and other schemes.
Fans will just have to tune in when CSI: Miami returns for another season on Monday, September 24 at 10pm ET/PT on CBS.
