After a car accident involving his wife and son, Detective Michael Britten (Jason Isaacs) finds himself living in two separate realities, one in which his wife Hannah (Laura Allen) dies in the accident and his son Rex (Dylan Minnette) survives, and the other in which his son dies and his wife survives.
As Britten begins to put his life back together in both realities, he returns to work and finds that his wife and son aren’t the only differences in his new existence.

In season 1 of Awake, Britten comes up with a simple solution to differentiate his two realities, wearing a different colored rubber band around his wrist for each one. Red for the reality in which his wife survives, and green for the one in which his son survives.
In the red reality he is partnered with Detective Isaiah “Bird” Freeman (Steve Harris) and sees a therapist named Dr. John Lee (B.D. Wong). In the green reality Britten is partnered up with newly promoted Detective Efrem Vega (Wilmer Valderrama) and sees a therapist named Dr. Judith Evans (Cherry Jones). Britten soon finds that his two realities overlap each other in subtle ways, as the case he is working in one reality leads him to a case on the other. Executive Producers Kyle Killen and Howard Gordon stated in a Comic-Con interview that this crossover in the police procedural side of the show won’t always happen, but it adds an interesting aspect to the story.
Britten will also have to deal with the cost of moving on in both realities during season 1 of Awake. In the red reality, his wife wants to sell their house and move, even though, to Britten, his son is still there. In the green reality, Britten is attracted to his son’s tennis coach and has to wonder if he’s cheating on his wife, even though she’s dead in that reality. Meanwhile, every time he closes his eyes to sleep, Britten wakes up in the other reality, begging the question, how long can he really survive in both realities?
Though delayed by some production issues, Awake has already gained some critical acclaim. Look for it on NBC sometime in March 2012.
