It was time for the training to begin in Arrow season 5 episode 2, but the new recruits didn’t exactly appreciate Oliver’s methods and everyone ended up quitting. That was because he only showed them the Green Arrow, not Oliver Queen. Also, Diggle ran into some trouble and found out he trusted the wrong guy, and Prometheus wasn’t too happy with Church going after the Green Arrow.
Here are the best quotes from “The Recruits.”
Arrow Recap: Oliver Tries to Torture His New Team Into Following Him>>>
“It’s really hot — I mean, not. It’s not.”
Curtis: “Impossible.”
Felicity: “It’s really hot — I mean, not. It’s not.”
– Watching Oliver do the salmon ladder in a suit
“I’m starting to sense a pattern.”
Oliver: “Curtis, if you think this is hard, wait until I actually start training you.”
Curtis: “What happens then?”
Oliver: “The last guy got an arrow in the leg before it even started.”
Curtis: “That was Roy, right?”
Oliver: “Also Roy, but I’m talking about Wild Dog.”
Felicity: “And you did put two arrows in Barry Allen’s back.”
Curtis: “I’m starting to sense a pattern.”
“I only wear a mask once a year, and that’s if my Halloween costume calls for it.”
Felicity: “You’re going to be wearing a mask when you’re training our recruits?”
Oliver: “Yeah, and so are you.”
Felicity: “I only wear a mask once a year, and that’s if my Halloween costume calls for it.”
“Fear is part of war, the part that keeps us alive. See these stripes? They give me strength, clarity, right or wrong, up and down, they tell me what to do, which means that fear can kiss my six.”
Diggle: “You good, soldier?”
Collins: “I got through basic training no sweat, but this is my first day in the soup, and I don’t want to be scared, but I am a little.”
Diggle: “Fear is part of war, the part that keeps us alive. See these stripes? They give me strength, clarity, right or wrong, up and down, they tell me what to do, which means that fear can kiss my six.”
“I’m just here to make sure that the horrible maiming stays at a minimum.”
Rene: “Figures there’d be more of you. Robin Hood needs his band of Merry Men, right?”
Felicity: “Well, I am just here for moral support.”
Curtis: “She means she’s here to make sure that the Green Arrow’s training technique doesn’t kill us.”
Felicity: “He’s not going to kill you. I’m just here to make sure that the horrible maiming stays at a minimum.”
“At least he’s not shooting them.”
– Felicity, watching Oliver train the recruits
“Or the vigilante moonlighting as mayor.”
Thea: “So is the plan to see to it personally with the new team?”
Oliver: “No. They’re nowhere near ready.”
Thea: “Then what’s the backup plan?”
Oliver: “Me. It’s one of the advantages of having the mayor moonlighting as a vigilante.”
Thea: “Or the vigilante moonlighting as mayor.”
Arrow Season 5 Interview: Chad L. Coleman Talks About His New Villainous Role>>>
“Oh, yeah, no problem, because there’s a lot.”
Oliver: “You know, I thought maybe we could hold off on the criticism for a little bit.”
Felicity: “Oh, yeah, no problem, because there’s a lot.”
“Some could say the same about you. I’ve been waiting five years to make that joke.”
Oliver: “They’re too green.”
Felicity: “Some could say the same about you. I’ve been waiting five years to make that joke.”
– Talking about using the new recruits to help at the free clinic
“I have some experience with that.”
Doctor: “Her broken bone never set.”
Oliver: “Oh, you’ll be fine. I have some experience with that.”
“We don’t have to think about do or don’t or right or wrong. There’s a clarity in that, right? A peace.”
Diggle: “Do you remember what I told you about fear?”
Collins: “Gets you through.”
Diggle: “That’s right. And so does the chain of command. We don’t have to think about do or don’t or right or wrong. There’s a clarity in that, right? A peace.”
“As much as I usually love hearing those three little words, gloating right now would be like kicking a puppy.”
Oliver: “You were right.”
Felicity: “As much as I usually love hearing those three little words, gloating right now would be like kicking a puppy.”
“Oliver is the one who makes a good leader. He’s the one that runs a good team. He’s the one that I chose to stand by and that I continue to choose to stand by.”
Felicity: “When I got to know you, the real you, I was in awe. I had never met somebody so passionate, so focused and determined to make a real difference. But the recruits didn’t get to see the real you because all you showed them was this angry guy in a mask. Like scary angry.”
Oliver: “I just thought that if they didn’t know who I was, it would make things easier … For me. Easier for me. When I was in the Bratva … Nobody in the Bratva uses their real names. Nobody knows anything about anyone’s life before they were Bratva.”
Felicity: “Sounds lonely.”
Oliver: “It’s effective. They teach you that the only person you can trust is yourself, that without personal attachment, there can be no loss. Laurel, Thea, Dig, even Roy, I let them into my crusade. I let them in … “
Felicity: “Then they left.”
Oliver: “I was protecting myself.”
Felicity: “I just think you’re missing something.”
Oliver: “Only one thing?”
Felicity: “The reason the original team worked so well was because of the trust and respect that everyone had for Oliver Queen, not the Green Arrow. Oliver is the one who makes a good leader. He’s the one that runs a good team. He’s the one that I chose to stand by and that I continue to choose to stand by.”
“Because I don’t want to fail anymore. I can’t do it alone. I need a team. Let’s honor the legacies of our fathers together.”
Oliver: “Your father didn’t give up his life so you could become a killer.”
Ragman: “You don’t know that.”
Oliver: “My father gave up his life to save mine. He made me promise to be better than him, to save this city in a way that he never could. It’s been nearly 10 years since that day. So far, I’ve failed.”
Ragman: “Why are you telling me this?”
Oliver: “Because I don’t want to fail anymore. I can’t do it alone. I need a team. Let’s honor the legacies of our fathers together.”
“We are hiring the former captain of the SCPD who just lost his daughter and is honoring her memory by dedicating himself to the city that she loved.”
Lance: “You want to hire a drunk to be your Deputy Mayor? What, Oliver’s approval ratings are not low enough?”
Thea: “If we were hiring a drunk, that would be a very good point, but that is not what we are doing. We are hiring the former captain of the SCPD who just lost his daughter and is honoring her memory by dedicating himself to the city that she loved. Okay, what do you think about that one?”
Lance: “I think maybe the wrong Queen ran for Mayor.”
Thea: “Look, Ollie, he told me you said that you needed a reason to stay sober, so I thought maybe this could be it.”
Lance: “Yeah, maybe it could.”

If it’s on TV — especially if it’s a procedural or superhero show — chances are Meredith watches it. She has a love for all things fiction, starting from a young age with ER and The X-Files on the small screen and the Nancy Drew books. Arrow kicked off the Arrowverse and her true passion for all things heroes. She’s enjoyed getting into the minds of serial killers since Criminal Minds, so it should be no surprise that her latest obsession is Prodigal Son.
