What are your best movies of 2022? If you’re a movie geek like I am, then you’ve probably seen a handful of movies this year, some regrettable and the others spectacular. Welcome to the grand jury where together we crown the best movies of 2022, the ones that have been at the center of pop-culture conversations.
2022 saw the theaters back to full capacity after a long year of stiff regulations and restrictions to crowding due to the coronavirus pandemic. The return to the cinema seems to unleash the best in film producers and creators. They simply went all guns blazing with several headline-grabbing films. Perhaps, a testament that while the cinemas were on break, the producers must have been creating and dreaming for when the cinema doors opened again.
Read on for our ranking of the best movies of 2022 as collated across several platforms. This roundup features the best of the best and definitely includes films from different genres — romantic comedies, thrillers, sci-fi, and so on. Here are the top 10 best movies of 2022.
1. “Top Gun: Maverick”
“Top Gun: Mavericks” is a sequel to the 1986 classic “Top Gun” which featured Tom Cruise as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell. It’s over 30 years and Mavericks is back at the U.S. Navy-Fighters Weapon School, also known as the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program — Top Gun. He leads the Top Gun graduates on a deadly mission that may cost the graduates their lives. The mission is a lot more complicated because among the Top Gun elite graduates is the son of Mavericks best friend Lieutenant Nick Bradshaw who died in the 1986 events. Can Mavericks and his boys carry out the assignment and return home in one piece? Go see for yourself.
Tom Cruise is still your Maverick. The film also features stars such as Jennifer Connelly (as Penny Benjamin), Ed Harris, Jon Hamm, and of course next-gen golden boys Miles Teller and Glen Powell. The Joseph Kosinski-directed movie currently tops the worldwide Box Office chart of highest-grossing films for 2022 with over $1.4 billion done already.
2. “The Batman”
Once again there was war and unrest in Gotham city caused by a rampaging serial killer who is out to murder vital political figures. Gotham needs a hero to investigate hidden corruption claims and who else to save Gotham city than Bruce Wayne? Although the call of duty this time around would require Wayne to question his family’s involvement in the events.
Robert Pattinson portrays Bruce Wayne. “The Batman” is as expected a mega-hit and by every standard one of the best movies of 2022.
3. “Everything Everywhere All at Once”
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” has got to be one of 2022’s under-the-radar success stories. Written and directed by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the film is about an aging Chinese-American immigrant Evelyn (Michelle Yeoh) who is on an adventure to save the world. As a result, she needs to explore other universes where she needs to connect with several of her alter egos and develop the series she needs to save the world. Evelyn is warped into different realities in a way that you probably haven’t seen before in any multiverse film.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” is a brilliant work of art, well deserving of its place on this list.
4. “Turning Red”
Walt Disney’s “Turning Red” is the only anime on our top 10 best movies of 2022. Whenever 13-year-old Meilin “Mei” Lee gets too excited or panics about anything she turns into a giant red panda. Mei will need to carry out a ritual on the night of a lunar eclipse to seal the red panda spirit. On the night when she should carry out the ritual, Mei decides to hold on to her powers so she abandons the ritual. Mei’s mom is enraged but with time everyone accepts her decision and they live happily ever after.
5. “The Banshees of Inisherin”
Set on a small island, “The Banshees of Inisherin” is about friendship and heartbreak. The relationship between two lifelong friends, Colm (Brendan Gleeson) and Pádraic (Colin Farrell) suddenly becomes severed due to an impasse. What follows is a string of strange occurrences between these once-upon-a-time jolly friends now turn enemies.
This is surely my favorite comedy-drama of the year 2022.
6. “Bullet Train”
Fan-favorite actor, Brad Pitt returns in this action-comedy with what you can call his best act in recent years.
Five different assassins boarded a swiftly-moving bullet train, each on an assignment. Surprisingly, each finds out there is something common about their mission. “Bullet Train” is an absolute thriller
7. “The Woman King”
Set in the 1820s, “The Woman King” is a historical action-drama recounting the heroic feats of the Agojie, an all-women warrior unit of the Kingdom of Dahomey in West Africa during the 18th and 19th centuries. Viola Davis trains and leads the army of women to their numerous conquests against arch-enemies such as the Oyo empire.
The film hit theaters in the United States on September 16, 2022, and has since received majorly positive reviews for its scintillating action choreography and standout acting. The movie has also grossed over $92 million in the 2022 Worldwide Box Office chart.
8. “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is a sequel to the 2018 hit movie “Black Panther.” The project was said to have begun in 2018 but was stalled due to Chadwick Boseman’s death in 2020 after battling colon cancer for a while. Boseman’s character T’Challa had to end and somehow the plot had to change a little, but finally, the film was released in the United States on November 11, 2022.
According to current Box Office reports, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” has grossed over $769 million worldwide, making it the sixth-highest-grossing movie of 2022. The project is a success on all grounds.
9. “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”
It’s not strange today to find so-called comedy films that are really not as funny as they were. However, “Glass Onion” is exactly as funny as a comedy-drama should be and this is not my opinion alone. The thousands of audiences who have seen the film feel the same way too. The film is rated 8/10 on IMDb and 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The story is about how a getaway on Tech billionaire Miles Bron’s private Greek Island turned out leaving a sour taste when suddenly someone turns up dead. The cause of the death will be investigated by renowned Southern detective Benoit Blanc.
10. “Tár”
The storyline is told around a renowned and accomplished composer-conductor, Lydia Tár — portrayed by Cate Blanchett. In a sad turn of events, Tár becomes a victim of cancel culture as her dirty secrets become public news. Accused of several acts of immoral behaviors such as giving promotions as rewards for sexual favors from her assistants.
Tár is purely a riches-to-rags story. The film explores the corrosive nature of fame, power, and influence. Cate Blanchett’s portrayal of the character deserves several award considerations.
