A mentally disturbed former co-worker turned kidnapper might not be the only obstacle for a happily ever after for Brennan and Booth in the final season of Bones. According to a recent interview with TVLine, the return of Brennan’s ex, Sully, in season 12 will greatly impact the married couple. It could even tear them apart.

The return of Eddie McClintock to Bones as FBI Special Agent Tim Sullivan has been announced for quite some time. Recently Bones‘ executive producer, Michael Peterson, revealed some of the circumstances behind Sully’s return and it doesn’t suggest good things for Booth and Brennan. Sully will come back in a tense period of Booth and Brennan’s relationship.
According to Peterson the final season of Bones will begin with Brennan at a rough emotional place. “(Sully) comes back at a time in Brennan’s life when she is emotionally unbalanced,” explained Michael Peterson. “She and Booth are going through a very difficult time, so it’s a strange time for this love from the past to show up. And it’s going to have some slight reverberations. I’ll be curious to see what the fans think.”
Sully last appeared all the way back in season 2 of Bones. He was Brennan’s partner and short-lived love interest during that time. The pair had a very brief but very intense relationship. It ended when Brennan turned Sully’s offer to sail to the Caribbean with him. Sully disappeared from the show afterwards and has barely been mentioned since his exit.

It would seem highly unlikely, not to mention a big slap in the face to viewers, for him to come back to season 12 just to break up Brennan and Booth. The much more likely situation is that Sully’s reappearance will make Booth jealous and eventually lead to the two reconciling and working out their differences.
Bones certainly wouldn’t be the first long-running show that didn’t stick their landing however, so what do you think? Will Sully’s return break-up Booth and Brennan? Will Bones have a happy ending?
