I’ve always wondered if Gossip Girl would be as successful as it has become if Kristen Bell didn’t do the voice of the infamous Upper East Side gossipmonger. Let’s face it, Bell has a voice of great snarkitude. Imagine if Blake Lively, who plays Serena, provided the voiceovers. Her voice is sultry, sure, but it is also perpetually drowsy and uninspired, like she’s about to fall asleep at any moment. If Leighton Meester, who plays Blair, were to be the voice of Gossip Girl, I think it would be too hyper and sweet, and ultimately not believable. Then again all these views are shaped by my opinions of Lively’s and Meesters characters on the show.
In any case, word on the street is that Kristen Bell has been bugging creator Josh Schwartz to let her at least do a cameo on the CW hit. “I’ve pitched [to] Josh Schwartz a couple of times for me to be on camera as a waitress or something but he wasn’t buying it. But hopefully he’ll change his mind in the future!” she says.
If ever Bell does get her cameo on Gossip Girl, what would the implications be for the real Gossip Girl? Looking at the synopsis for the season 2 finale “The Goodbye Gossip Girl,” Serena will reportedly try to unmask Gossip Girl in the episode. If she succeeds, wouldn’t it be fitting to let Bell appear in this episode?
We all know that Bell can act. She headlined the critically acclaimed but criminally short-lived series Veronica Mars. And it will be fun, in the sort of wink-wink way, when she appears on a Gossip Girl episode, as a waitress or something similar, as she suggested. How do they plan to deal with her voice, though? Would the cameo mean she can’t have a single dialogue, or perhaps change her accent or something?
There were rumors way, way back that Gossip Girl is really Gossip Guy – Serena’s brother Eric (Connor Paolo). Even if it weren’t true, we can at least conclude the voice is hardly material, isn’t it. Bell’s playful voice just happened to be perfect for a seemingly omnipresent gossip source with lots of connections. And maybe it ought to stay that way.
