Coyote Ugly‘s Piper Perabo is set to headline a new USA series about a newbie CIA trainee who finds herself over her head when she gets promoted to field operative. Alias, anyone?
Covert Affairs, premiering July 13 alongside the second season opener of White Collar, also stars Ugly Betty alum Christopher Gorham, who’ll play a federal agent. Heroes‘ Sendhil Ramamurth and The OC‘s Peter Gallagher will also be onboard as another federal agent and CIA director respectively. House’s Anne Dudek plays Danielle, a Annie’s older sister who knows nothing of her life as a spy, while Eion Bailey will play her ex-boyfriend.
Covert Affairs will mainly follow Annie Walker (Perabo) as she transitions from newbie to field operative while wondering why her ex-boyfriend suddenly takes an interest to her agency bosses. She is fluent in six languages, has traveled all over the world and is clearly one of the best in her batch of trainees.
That, however, hardly explains why she is asked to report for active duty a month before her training is over. As it turns out, there may be something/someone from her past that the CIA is after. Here’s where the ex-boyfriend enters the picture.
“They’re similar in feel, though they’re different franchises,” says USA original programming president Jeff Wachtel of the network’s upcoming Tuesday twin-bill. “Just because cable is always looking for new models doesn’t mean we have to throw out smart parts of the business.”
“This in some ways is the most ambitious show that we’ve undertaken,” Wachtel adds. “The story is bigger, the production values are bigger, and the ensemble too is a little bigger than our other shows.”
Covert Affairs comes from the producers of the Bourne trilogy and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
