What a season of Dancing with the Stars it has been. It all started ten weeks ago when six male celebrities teed off against six female celebrities. One by one, the stars were eliminated every week, until it was down to the final three: entertainer Marie Osmond, Scary Spice Melanie Brown and speedster Helio Castroneves.
It was a tough road for them. Marie especially went through very difficult times throughout this season of Dancing with the Stars, but she was definitely a trooper and pulled through. Her multitude of fans kept her in the competition, perhaps longer than she should have been, but she no doubt brought much joy to the dance floor this season. She ended last night’s performance show at the very bottom of the judges’ leaderboard, with only 46 points out of a possible 60, and tonight, those scores proved to be too low for even her ferocious fanbase to counter. Marie and Jonathan Roberts were revealed early on to be the tenth couple to be eliminated.
To fill in the two-hour maw of tonight’s broadcast, all of the previously eliminated couples were invited back on stage to dance one last time. Josie Maran and Alec Mazo danced a forgettable foxtrot. Albert Reed and Anna Trebunskaya, and Mark Cuban and Kym Johnson also performed. Wayne Newton and Cheryl Burke did not dance because Wayne is under doctor’s orders not to dance quite yet. Floyd Mayweather and Karina Smirnoff also did not perform because pugilist Floyd is gearing up for a big fight coming up soon. The best performance of the night was by Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas. They come back to dance their cha cha, and Sabrina shone as brightly tonight as she ever did.
Another notable performance tonight was Cameron Mathison and Edyta Sliwinska’s Superman paso doble. Not only was it a great performance, but Cameron finally took off his shirt at the end of it. Jane Seymour and Tony Dovolani and Jennie Garth and Derek Hough came back to shake their booties one last time.
It was an excruciating wait until the last half hour of the show when it was finally Mel’s and Helio’s turn to dance. Mel and Maks danced their mambo routine first, and got rave reviews from the judges followed by a perfect score. Helio and Julianne reprised their yellow-costumed quickstep and also earned a perfect score. Mel’s and Helio’s scores were 85 and 84 out of 90, respectively, meaning this is one hell of a close race. After combining the judges’ scores from both nights with America’s votes from last night, it was Helio who prevailed over Mel in the end. He and Julianne were presented with mirror ball trophies and they are the new champions of Dancing with the Stars.
