Dominic Sandoval was once called “what this competition is all about” by the judges. A 21-year-old b-boy, he proved that breakers can do a lot more than cool tricks. He tried throughout the competition never to think about whether or not he’d be going home but rather, lived in the moment. Known for his crush on host Cat Deeley and his outgoing nature, Dominic won us over both on and off the stage. He took the time to speak with us this morning about his time on So You Think You Can Dance.
Check out the entire interview below.
Tell me a little bit about your dance training and background leading up to the competition. Did you mostly learn on the street?
I’ve pretty much been b-boying since 1999, for the last 7 or 8 years. I was 13 years old when I started. I knew the show auditions were coming up this past March so in January, I took some classes. I did hip hop training, learning choreography. Everything was just thrown at me when I tried out.
How was the audition process for you?
All I was thinking was, “Hopefully, I can get a little air time.” I didn’t even think I’d make it past L.A. I went through the whole experience with Hok which was great.
Which dance style did you find the hardest to pick up?
All of them! No, probably the waltz. When I get a new style of dance, I try to go online, research it, and watch videos. I couldn’t find anything on the Viennese Waltz with a Spanish twist. It was hard to figure out.
You and Sabra had great chemistry together. What do you think was the secret?
Thank you! I think it was our personalities. She’s like the comedian of the girls and I’m the same of the guys. I actually think we got put together because people thought we’d fail. They didn’t show us much leading up to the live shows. We doubled our rehearsal time and just tried to come together as one.
Were you surprised to land in the bottom last night?
I try not to think too much about it. I was happy with what I did. I thought my dances went really did but maybe nothing really stuck out.
How do you feel having made it to the top 10 and therefore, you get to go on tour?
I’m definitely blessed and honored to be there. It was stress off our shoulders when we made top 10. Hok will be going too as a swing, I’m really excited. We do some stuff together on the tour along with Sara.
What is your goal once the tour is over? What will you pursue?
Me and Hok were talking. We’ve been getting options and phone calls. We can’t accept anything right now but we’re gonna talk about our best path to take for our futures.
