Last month, the SCI-FI Channel announced that it would be renewing the Stargate SG-1’s spin-off Stargate: Atlantis, with the new season comprising of 20 episodes.  Executive Vice-President of Original Programming for the cable network, said they are “proud” to bring back the show for another year, as it “truly came out from under the shadow of its sister series this year and proved that it’s a hit in its own right.”

While production for the show’s fifth season is not slated to begin until early next year, executive-producer and showrunner Joseph Malozzi is already working hard to develop next season’s 20 episodes.

“The initial euphoria at news of the pick-up lasted all of a minute or two before reality set in: we now have to get back into the office and start spinning 20 more stories,” Malozzi told Gateworld.

Although Malozzi said that it is still too early to discuss any creative decisions regarding the Stargate: Atlantis‘ new season, he revealed that he, as well as Paul Mullie, will continue serving as showrunners, and “would very much love for [show newbies] Amanda [Tapping, Samantha Carter] and Jewel [Staite, Jennifer Keller] to spend another year hanging out in the Pegasus Galaxy.”

As for the writing team, Malozzi said that the “exceptionally talented Carl Binder, Martin Gero, and Alan McCullough will be back to resume their writing-producing duties for the show’s fifth season.”

While Malozzi does not have much to divulge about Stargate: Atlantis‘ new season, he has shared what he hopes to do with the show for next year’s run.

“I would very much like to continue what we did in season four — introduce storylines that can play through the whole of a season, explore our heroes and villains, and develop the relationships between the Atlantis personnel,” he said.

Stargate: Atlantis is currently on its fourth season on the SCI-FI channel, airing every Friday night at 10/9c.
