Katherine Heigl, Dr. Isobel “Izzie” Stevens on the popular series Grey’s Anatomy, expressed some kind and positive words after co-star Isaiah Washington’s completion of the weeklong stretch in rehab as a result of his homophobic slur at co-star T.R. Knight. Moreover, she talked about her co-star’s return and the process of getting back to work.
“I, obviously, have been very verbal about all of this, but there isn’t a lot going on right now…We’re all hopeful…It’s a great group of people, and we work really well together. We work really hard, and it’s unusual that we do get along as well as we do.” says Heigl.
Washington’s bold remarks instantly drew criticism from cast members as well as bosses at ABC and gay-rights advocates. He went into the unidentified rehab center on January 23, 2007, a week after the controversial outburst at the January 15th Golden Globes which nearly ended his career in the series Grey’s Anatomy where he plays Dr. Preston Xavier Burke.
Washington deemed his treatment, which includes anger-management session and psychological examinations, a vital move for his contemplation of what happened. And although he is no longer a patient at the facility, his publicist verified that he will still continue outpatient treatment, a decision that is highly praised by Heigl. “If it were ignored or just brushed under the rug, I would be angrier about it…But he’s trying very hard. We’re all trying very hard.” says Heigl.
