Patrick Dempsey has received significant public attention for his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. For his “McDreamy” role, he has earned two Golden Globe nominations for the category of Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series in 2006 and 2007 but failed to take home trophies in both occasions. This year, the 43-year-old heartthrob has received an Emmy nod but it seems that he’s determined not fall short yet again.
The Grey’s Anatomy star has taken himself down a notch from the leading-man category to supporting actor in his award campaign materials, according to the Los Angeles Times.
If you’re a fan of Grey’s Anatomy, then you’d know that this season gave Dempsey noticeably more screen time and more substantial acting material. His character went through a serious depression and refused to go to work after losing a pregnant patient and being hit by a lawsuit. Derek’s depression deepened after he realized that he’s lost more patients than he’s saved. But thanks to longtime star-crossed love Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), Derek got his groove back, proposed to Meredith and exchanged vows.
Ironically, out of all the seasons on Grey’s Anatomy, season 5 was the one that captured Dempsey’s range of emotions. So this should have been Dempsey’s saving grace.
Perhaps Dempsey just didn’t want to take too much of a risk. If he got stuck in the lead category, he would have been up against Mad Men‘s Jon Hamm, Sons of Anarchy‘s Charlie Hunnam, and Gossip Girl‘s Chance Crawford and Ed Westwick, among others.
As for Pompeo, who is also in the lead category in this year’s Emmy race, she’s up against Damages‘ Glenn Close, Gossip Girl‘s Leighton Meester, Big Love‘s Jeanne Tripplehorn, and Mad Men‘s January Jones and Elisabeth Moss.
