When you’re a young teen star who rises to the top of her career at such a young age, and you seem to be the perfect role model, the paparazzi will make sure to uncover every shred of evidence to prove that you’re not. Just ask Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, or Lindsay Lohan. As they grew up in front in the spotlight, stories were published daily about their worst moments, rarely focusing on the positive. Hannah Montana’s Miley Cyrus, in the last year especially, has found out just how brutal the tabloids can be with stories written about everything from a fake pregnancy to her father’s reckless driving to those oh so racy photos. Here’s a look back at Miley Cyrus’s tabloid moments – the bad, the really bad, and the ugly.
In September of last year, rumors spread like wildfire on the internet that not only had Miley Cyrus hit rock bottom, but she had gotten herself pregnant. Someone doctored an article from the teen magazine J-14 and everyone bought it, from her fans to supposedly trusted news sources. J-14 later retracted the article and issued an apology to the Disney star and her young, impressionable fans.
Throughout 2008, Miley was apparently not careful enough with the pictures that she and her friends took. Photos of the young star in her underwear, showing her bra, sprawling across the laps of unknown boys, in a wet t-shirt in the shower, and pulling her bathing suit down, were all over the internet. In February, Miley filmed a behind the scenes look at her Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour. In one particular segment, Miley was in the passenger seat of her father’s vehicle without a seat belt. Newspapers and magazines labeled Billy Ray as an irresponsible father.
Things really hit the fan in April, when Miley posed for, what she felt were, artistic photos for Vanity Fair magazine. The main picture that drew the most controversy, was of Miley, wearing nothing but a blanket and showing her bare back. Another that raised a few eyebrows was one of the young star draped across her father’s lap in, what some would call, a sexy pose. Miley expressed her embarrassment over the photos and has said that she learned a lot from it, especially that her fans will stick by her through just about anything.
The way that the paparazzi has turned on Miley at times, humiliated her, and exposed every private detail of her life could cause a young star to crumble. We need to look no further than Britney Spears to see just what the media can do to a person. Yet, Miley has remained positive, strong, and open. She has defended herself when necessary and admitted her mistakes. If she can remain unaffected by the paparazzi, she should make the transition from teen queen to one of Hollywood’s hottest young adults without the issues that many of her peers can’t seem to overcome.
It seems you just can’t stop Miley Cyrus. Forbes named her one of the top twenty earners under the age of 25, in 2007, with an annual earning of $3.5 million. Her first single, “7 Things” off of her solo album Breakout became her highest charting song to date. She headed out on a tour that was so difficult to get tickets for, that parents shelled out thousands to get their kids a seat to see the Disney star. Her room is decorated with the awards she won this year from Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards to Teen Choice Awards. Try as the paparazzi may, it seems there’s just no stopping Miley.
