When iZombie returns for season 3, fans will be treated to a very different world. During the show’s panel at the Television Critics Association winter previews, executive producer Rob Thomas revealed several details about the new season, including the absence of a single big villain.

“Season 3 has a much different feel than seasons 1 and 2,” Thomas revealed. “Both of seasons 1 and 2, there were big bads who were pretty clearly doing awful things and both seasons ended up, season 1 had a very cool showdown like a gunfight at the O.K. Corral and then season 2 topped that with a full-on traditional zombie movie at the end where they’re trying to escape from zombies. This season we wanted to do something very different.”
“In this season, you do not have such a clearly defined antagonist at the center of the show,” Thomas continued. “In fact, the big mystery of season 3 for the audience is trying to figure out whose side are we on? The zombies at this military outfit Fillmore Graves just want to survive. Some of them are willing to go further than Liv might think necessary but who is in the right in this situation? That’s a big part of the question. No one needs to be nefarious in a blatant way. There’s much more figuring out who’s got the best plan for zombies moving forward.”

Of course there’s more to iZombie‘s third season than just Fillmore Graves. Fans can expect more Peyton Charles now that Aly Michalka has been promoted to series regular, as well as Clive’s (Malcolm Goodwin) amusing reactions to Liv’s frequent changes in personality even now that he’s aware of the existence of zombies.
“It’s been a lot of fun just playing with different reactions,” said Goodwin. “Now that Clive is in on it, sometimes he plays along with it, sometimes he could be put off by it. Sometimes he converses with the brains in a different way.”
“Malcolm’s reactions were so amazing and we were so desperate not to lose that,” added co-creator Diane Ruggiero-Wright.
