Aside from the big Cylon reveal, the thing that really blew audiences away at the end of Battlestar Galactica‘s third season was the return of Starbuck. Lee Adama (Jamie Bamber) had witnessed her ship exploding and the entire Galactica crew had mourned her loss, so it was a bit unexpected when she showed up in her Viper claiming that she had found Earth. One of the major storylines in season 4 of Battlestar Galactica will revolve around what really happened to Kara Thrace. Is she a clone? Is she a Cylon? Or did she never really die in the first place?
Today, actress Katee Sackhoff spoke to the press about what we can expect when the Sci Fi Channel series returns for its final season next week. She also dropped a bombshell about who she thinks her character should romantically end up with, and it’s not her on-again, off-again beau, Lee Adama.
One thing that might surprise fans of the series is the fact that even the actors don’t always know where the story will go. Sackhoff admitted that she has no idea if any clues are buried within the famous “Last Supper” photo that was taken of the cast. She also said that, despite the fact that they’ve filmed the first 14 episodes of the season, there still hasn’t been any talk of how Starbuck returned from the dead. The actress believes that the producers want to save that reveal for the end of the series.
However, one thing Sackhoff might know is the true identity of the final Cylon model. “We’ve been told who it is,” she admitted. “I personally don’t believe it. I think that’s something that’s going to be kept until the very end. We do talk about it sometimes, but as far as who it is, I don’t think any of us will know for sure until we see on television.”
Sackhoff discussed how some of her fellow actors were shocked and upset when it was revealed that they were Cylons at the end of the third season. Michael Hogan, who plays Colonel Tigh, has had an especially hard time dealing with his character’s transformation. However, the actress admitted that if Kara Thrace ends up being the final Cylon, she’ll be completely indifferent to the reveal.
Fans who tuned in to Battlestar Galactica‘s “Razor” TV movie will remember the prophecy that Starbuck may be a harbinger of doom. “I think when I read that at the end, I went, ‘Of course she is,'” Sackhoff joked. “What else can happen to Starbuck? Come on, lay it all on me. What’s the worst possible thing? There you have it, she’s gonna kill everybody. Great! That is something that has been carried through the entire season so far.”
While viewers are used to seeing a tough, unshakable Kara Thrace, Sackhoff revealed that in season 4 her character will feel much more alone, lost, and vulnerable. It’s also possible she’ll be a little bit dangerous, as she doesn’t plan on letting anything, or anyone, stop her from getting back to Earth. This will definitely lead to some clashing with Admiral Adama (Edward James Olmos) and President Roslin (Mary McDonnell), who are wary of the resurrected pilot’s true intentions.
Even with all of the turmoil present on the show, there’s still time to ponder the more romantic side of things. When asked if she sees Kara and Lee eventually ending up together, Sackhoff replied, “I don’t think that Lee and Kara will ever be happy together. I don’t think they’re meant to be together. I think that they’re meant to be best friends. They’re meant to push each other, they’re meant to have those arguments that drive you. If anyone is fitting for her, and if there’s anyone that she’d actually allow herself to be happy with and be with, it’d probably be Leoben. Anders is too weak for her emotionally, Lee’s too much of a boy scout. . .so if there’s any person that she could ever let her guard down with and be happy with, it’s probably Leoben.”
It’s impossible to predict what will happen to the crew of the Battlestar Galactica by the time the final season wraps up, but Sackhoff admitted that, if she had her way, Starbuck would die at the end. She wishes her character peace and calm in her final moments, but sees no way that Kara could end up happy.
In fact, as the actress pointed out, there may not be much happiness for anyone on the series. “I think that the ending is going to be very shocking, for sure,” she said. “I think that [it’s] probably going to ruffle a few feathers. I don’t think that there’s any way to make everyone happy. I said to [executive producer] Ron Moore from the very beginning, ‘Please don’t wrap everyone up in a pretty little box and put a bow on it.’ He would never do that, because that’s not real, and Battlestar has always been based in reality.”
