This is one of a series of brief articles meant to introduce the DWTS viewer to each of the season 13 celebrities. Until Dancing with the Stars begins and we get our TV introductions, this will have to do!
Why You Know Her
As a child of famous parents (John and Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas), Chynna Phillips was never exactly unknown. She began her own career in film, appearing in a fair number of 80s movies (including Some Kind of Wonderful, Caddyshack II and Say Anything…).
Mostly, however, Chynna is known as one of the three members of the pop group Wilson Phillips. Their self-titled debut album, released in 1990, ended up selling over 8 million copies and included the ridiculously memorable “Hold On.” Chynna left the group after their second album in 1992, only to return for a third release in 2004.
Why She’s on Dancing with the Stars
This one might count as pure promotion. Chynna Phillips is undoubtedly on the comeback trail: Wilson Phillips is together and working, the group appeared in this year’s Bridesmaids and there’s a reality show in the works for the TV Guide Network. A successful (or even moderately successful) stint on Dancing with the Stars can only help this.
Dancing/Performance Experience
Although she’s no dancer, Chynna has been performing in music and acting for most of her life. Thus it won’t be much of a surprise if she takes well to the ballroom.
DWTS Potential
How much do people want to remember the glory days of Wilson Phillips? If the audience is excited to see Chynna again — and if the woman can dance — she might have a good chance. If not, she’ll have trouble just trying to hold on.

Laurel grew up in Mamaroneck, NY, Grosse Pointe, MI and Bellevue WA. She then went on to live in places like Boston, Tucson, Houston, Wales, Tanzania, Prince Edward Island and New York City before heading back to Seattle. Ever since early childhood, when she became addicted to The Muppet Show, Laurel has watched far too much TV. Current favorites include Chuck, Modern Family, Supernatural, Mad Men and Community. Laurel received a BA in Astrophysics (yes, that is possible) from Colgate University and a PhD in Middle Eastern Studies and History of Science from Columbia University before she realized that television is much better than studying.
