Kristen Bell caused quite a stir when she turned down the opportunity for a regular role on ABC’s mega hit Lost.  Bewildered fans were stunned by the seemingly vapid starlet’s rejection of the offer.  The various reasons speculated about in the press seemed transparent, at best.  It now turns out that the Veronica Mars star was actually entertaining two high profile offers, one that was unknown until yesterday.  Bell, as it turns out, will be appearing on NBC’s Heroes.  Beware of potential spoilers ahead.

The announcement broke over the weekend that Bell will be joining the cast as a character from H.R.G’s past, Elle, with ties to Peter’s apparent ‘death,’ according to Variety.  Before anyone says ‘Bell chose Heroes over Lost,’ though, the word from Heroes‘ creator Tim Kring is that they were able to bring Bell on only due to their own fluidity and a fortuitous bare patch in the actress’ itinerary.

“This was not easy to pull off, but since we’re an ensemble show, with many arcs playing out through the year, we found a way to jump into a small window in [Bell’s] schedule.” Kring was quoted by Variety.

‘Small window,’ of course, does not translate to series regular, which counters any argument that Bell chose Heroes over LostThe Lost role was a long term commitment, and if anything Kring’s comments support the notion that Bell turned down Lost because she was already over committed and simply could not fit the island mystery into her schedule.

On Heroes, Elle’s character is so far being described with a bit of ambiguity.  There is no concrete word on whether she will have abilities, or whether she will be a good girl or a bad girl.  When Elle first appears, it will be sometime in October and she will be committing a major crime.  Red Herring, anyone?
