It hasn’t even premiered yet and somehow ABC’s new superhero drama Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is already the most buzzy show this fall. A lot of that has to do with being connected to huge box office smash (or Hulk smash, if you will) The Avengers. Some of it might also come from the involvement of cult hero Joss Whedon.
Whatever reason you’re excited about S.H.I.E.L.D. there’s no denying people are waiting on the edge of their seats for the show to premiere. Executive producers and husband-and-wife duo Jed Whedon (yes, he’s related to Joss) and Maurissa Tancharoen talked to reporters about the excitement and challenges of guiding the show at San Diego Comic Con.

Highlights from the interview:
- S.H.I.E.L.D. will be telling stories in The Avengers universe, but from the perspective of normal people. The whole team will be filled with non-superpowered people.
- They said they don’t want to do lame cop outs like, “You just missed Iron Man!” They want to tell more grounded stories with the human characters.
- The mystery surrounding Coulson’s resurrection will be a big part of the first season. They refused to comment on whether it would be a short arc or a season-long mystery, but they claim they don’t want to drive people crazy.
- Are there any plans to connect the show to Thor 2? Apparently they don’t want to rely on the films too much for their storytelling. They want to make it rewarding if you just watch the films or the show, but very rewarding if you watch both.
- There might be consequences from the battle of New York that took place in The Avengers film, because now people know aliens and supernatural creatures exist.
- They want to ground the show with real people, especially because they don’t have millions of dollars to spend on special effects.
- Movies rarely talk about the fallout when cities are destroyed, but the show will be able to delve into that.
- The episodes are stand alone but they want to include a little bit of everything, including the spy aspect of S.H.I.E.L.D.
- The things audiences latched onto with The Avengers wasn’t so much the action but the humor and the characters, which they hope to continue with on the show.
- They mention that the Marvel universe is so vast that there are always plenty of stories and characters to pull from.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres September 24 at 8pm ET on ABC.
