On March 10, 2017 at 8/7c The Vampire Diaries will come to an end with its series finale. Thanks to the latest casting news from TVLine we now know that it won’t be the last time we see at least one of the characters from the long-running show. Matt Davis, who plays Alaric, is set to appear in episode 8 of season 4 of The Originals, which premieres the week after The Vampire Diaries comes to a close.
The CW Sets Mid-Season Premieres for The 100, Riverdale and More, Plus Vampire Diaries Series Finale>>> This crossover news is the first real big piece of information about The Originals‘ mysterious season 4. Little is known about The Originals season 4 other than it will feature a grown-up Hope and will see the characters hunt the seven werewolf packs to save the Mikaelson family. The crossover appearance will see Alaric, whose is currently trying to save his twin daughters on The Vampire Diaries, come to New Orleans to deliver a “priceless artifact” to Elijah.
This is the fourth time a Vampire Diaries character has made their way over to The Originals. Michael Trevino’s was the first (and only) crossover for a long time when his character Tyler came looking for revenge from Klaus. In season 3, though, the floodgates opened with a two-part episode crossover and actors Zach Roerig (Matt) and Paul Wesley (Stefan) both appearing in the spin-off.

This bit of news suggests several things about The Originals season 4 and the end of The Vampire Diaries. Most obviously this seems to suggest that Alaric will survive the series finale, which is never 100% assured with a show as dramatic and violent as The Vampire Diaries. It also hints that we might see several Vampire Diaries characters pop up on The Originals. The series finale might not be some characters’ final farewell.
