Seattle Grace is about to lose one of its interns and this time it’s Dr. Sadie Harris. This doesn’t count as one of those rocky Grey’s Anatomy exits. Because, unlike Isaiah Washington, Brooke Smith, and possibly T.R. Knight, Sadie’s portrayer, Melissa George, is leaving on the best of terms.
“It was my choice,” George, who was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her role in In Treatment, confirmed to Entertainment Weekly‘s Michael Ausiello at HBO’s after-party at the Beverly Hilton. “My last day of work is Tuesday.”
A show insider, however, suggests that writing off Sadie on the canvas was more mutual than simply the actress’ choice.
“Melissa’s arc came to a natural end. Everyone at the show adores her. We’re genuinely sad to see her go,” the insider said.
George joined Grey’s Anatomy as a recurring guest star for season 5 and was originally planned to be a romantic foil for Erica Hahn and Callie Torres, but was later retooled to simply be a bisexual character after Brooke Smith was fired. Her initial deal also called for her to appear in roughly eight to 11 episodes with an option to become a series regular just like Kevin McKidd.
Still, George insists that she simply wants to “do something else,” adding that she adores the cast and crew of the medical drama.
“I love the show so much,” she said. “I’ve made some beautiful friends. I love T.R. Knight. I love Patrick Dempsey, Justin Chambers… I adore Ellen Pompeo. I think she’s a strong, incredible woman. And Katherine Heigl is the most beautiful creature on Earth.”
George won’t say anything about how her character will exit Seattle Grace but does tease that “it won’t be a big send-off, but it’s really cool what they do.”
Grey’s Anatomy airs every Thursday at 9 pm on ABC.
