The Television Critics Association has revealed its nominations for the best in television over the past year, with USA’s Mr. Robot and FX’s The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story leading the pack.
Both shows picked up four nominations, including nods for Program of the Year and stars Rami Malek, Sarah Paulson and Courtney B. Vance. The TCA also endorsed many other new shows including the CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Netflix’s Master of None and Lifetime’s UnREAL, all picking up three nominations (as did FX’s The Americans).
Other notable new contenders include the FXX comedy You’re the Worst and star Aya Cash and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. Meanwhile, HBO staples like Game of Thrones, Veep and Silicon Valley all received recognition too.
The awards do prove that the TCA favors new shows. Last year’s most nominated programs, Transparent and Empire (the latter winning for Program of the Year) are not nominated at all. Neither are Jane the Virgin, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt or last year’s only double winner, Inside Amy Schumer.
For the second year in a row, ABC’s critically-acclaimed limited series American Crime didn’t receive any nominations. Also coming up short were House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, Mozart in the Jungle, Narcos and Outlander, all of which received recent Emmy or Golden Globe nominations.
Unlike most awards, the TCA simply honors individual performances in Comedy and Drama, not differentiating between genders or lead and supporting. Interestingly, the men dominated the Drama categories (picking up four of the six slots) while Master of None‘s Aziz Ansari is the only male in the Comedy category, competing against five women.
The big award, Program of the Year, includes seven nominees with series, limited series and a reality program, though there are no comedies in the mix. Game of Thrones will do battle with newcomers Mr. Robot and UnREAL, plus Making a Murderer and a trio of FX programs: The Americans, Fargo and The People v. O.J. Simpson.
By far, HBO and FX/FXX lead all networks thanks to additional nominees for programs like The Leftovers and the Bryan Cranston TV movie All the Way.
Here’s the complete list of 2016 TCA Award nominations. The winners will be revealed at the organization’s annual summer press tour on Saturday, August 6 in a ceremony hosted by Jane the Virgin‘s Jaime Camil.
