The Pawnee Parks Department will be back for another year. NBC has renewed the critically acclaimed comedy Parks and Recreation for season 6, making it the first comedy to get a renewal for next year. Meanwhile, other NBC comedies have been axed.
Parks and Recreation joins Revolution, Grimm, Parenthood, Chicago Fire and Law and Order: SVU on the network’s list of renewed scripted shows. The network has also picked up several new shows, including four comedies (two of them starring Emmy winners Michael J. Fox and Sean Hayes).
UPDATE #1: Aside from this renewal, NBC has cancelled Whitney, which ran for two seasons, as well as the freshman comedy 1600 Penn.
UPDATE #2: Add Guys with Kids and Up All Night to the chopping block. NBC has cancelled both shows. Guys with Kids ends after one season (a slight surprise as its executive producer is future Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon). Up All Night was basically cancelled when it took a break to try and change from a single-camera comedy to a multi-camera comedy, leading to star Christina Applegate leaving. But this makes it official.

The Parks and Recreation renewal is important, especially because the show ended its fifth season on several cliffhangers.
Leslie is facing a recall vote for her city council election. Tom is facing corporate competition for his Rent-a-Swag business. April is going to veterinary school. Ann and Chris are still trying to have a baby together. And most importantly, Ron Swanson is about to become a father after the shocking revelation that, apparently, his girlfriend Diane (Lucy Lawless) is pregnant.
Parks and Recreation‘s renewal comes at a time when NBC is completely overhauling its comedy lineup. 30 Rock and The Office both ended this year and four others have been axed *not counting the failure of Animal Practice). This leaves the fates if Go On, Community, and The New Normal. up in the air.
NBC’s official 2013-2014 schedule will be announced at its upfront presentation on Monday.
