When it comes to spinoffs, NCIS has had a mixed record. One spinoff did really well – aka a little hit show known as NCIS: Los Angeles. But when NCIS: LA attempted their own spinoff, it didn’t fare as well – aka the failed pilot for NCIS: Red. With news of another new spinoff in the works, fans have to wonder: Will this one make it?
On the eve of the NCIS Season 11 premiere, CBS announced yesterday that it was planning yet another spinoff from its powerhouse of a hit. Deadline reports that the new series will be introduced in a two-part NCIS episode that is expected to shoot in February and then air sometime in the spring.
NCIS: New Orleans
The new series will be set in New Orleans and will be executive produced by NCIS star Mark Harmon and executive producer/showrunner Gary Glasberg, who will also be handling the writing for the show. The spinoff will center on the NCIS office in New Orleans and the team will handle cases from Pensacola through Mississippi and Louisiana to the Texas panhandle. Setting the show in New Orleans will allow the creators to take advantage of the city’s well-known reputation for providing visitors with music, fun and perhaps a bit of debauchery. The reputation of the town makes it a magnet for military personnel on leave – which in turn will undoubtedly bring the agents many cases.
Will the New NCIS Spinoff Make It?
NCIS: Red may have never made it past the two episodes that served as its back-door pilot last year, but the chances are still good that a new spinoff could turn into another hit for CBS. Perhaps NCIS: Los Angeles was just too young to spawn its own spinoff, but the original NCIS is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Plus, when you add in the fact that its being executive produced by Mark Harmon and Gary Glasberg, you’ve got what could be the winning formula for another hit show. It remains to be seen how the new series will do once it airs.
