Usain Bolt wants everyone to know that he’s the greatest. He has become the only man to repeat gold in both the 100m and now the 200m as well. For this era, at least, he is unbeatable. His teammate, Yohan Blake, gave him a run for his money, though. With Bolt’s unbelievable stride length, Blake came up just short at the finish line. As expected, he finished with the silver in a comfortable lead over the next finisher.
What was more of an unexpected feat was the 17-year-old Jamaican Warren Weir beating out Wallace Spearmon for the final medal. After Spearmon’s disqualification in Beijing for stepping slightly out of his lane, his bronze medal had been taken away. Despite a recent nagging injury, he was hoping for redemption. But this time, he missed bronze by 0.06 seconds. While his loss stung, Weir was in shock and delighted to join his teammates in the glory. Blake had to interrupt Bolt from his post-race push-ups just to give him a congratulatory hug. Bolt never misses an opportunity for the limelight.
Everybody’s question immediately following the race was, will Bolt return in Rio? “Definitely, definitely,” he responded. His new goal is to solidify his legendary status by becoming the first man to win three consecutive golds in both sprint events. Before even getting his gold medal in hand, his sights have already shifted to 2016. With commanding world records, will anyone be able to touch his elite times in the next four years?
