Here in the States, we still have to wait several weeks for the premiere of the new season of Project Runway. Canadians, on the other hand, only have to wait about a day for theirs.

Tomorrow, the very first episode ever of Project Runway Canada will air on the Slice Network on Canadian Television. Like many reality show exports, the format will remain the same, but of course the faces will change. Most notably, taking Heidi Klum’s spot as host is supermodel Iman.

Iman was born in Somali and now makes her home in the States, so her individual connection to Canada isn’t exactly apparent, but her connection to the Project Runway series is.

She appeared on season 2 of Project Runway. In episode 11, she was part of the “What’s Your Line?” competition, wherein the remaining designers – Daniel Vosovic, Chloe Dao, Santino Rice and Kara Janx – had to create a dress that was both appropriate for Iman and representative of their plans for the Olympus Fashion Week finale competition. She ultimately selected the own designed by Daniel V., and her selection assured him a spot in the finale.

So how did she wind up on Project Runway Canada? Like many of us working stiffs, she took the commute time into consideration. She lives in New York City with her husband, David Bowie, and so was able to more easily travel for the show while her daughter was out of school for the summer.

She says she’s not usually a fan of reality television, but is obviously making an exception for Project Runway Canada, “because,” she says, “it’s not salacious. We don’t try to create hyperbolic, unrealistic dramas. But the creative force, the agony of the blank canvas, is really something to see.”
