Teresa Giudice and her husband Joe Giudice who star on The Real Housewives of New Jersey were indicted earlier today with the charges of “conspiring to defraud lenders and illegally obtain mortgages and other loans as well as allegedly hiding assets and income during a bankruptcy case,” according to the U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman as reported by Fox News.
The indictment returned today contained 39 counts including “conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, bank fraud, making false statements on loans and applications, and bankruptcy fraud.” Joe Giudice was also charged with failure to file tax returns from 2004 to 2008. During that time frame he allegedly made approximately $1 million.
If convicted, the Giudices could face up to 50 years in jail each and up to $600,000 in fines, according to the indictment.
“The indictment returned today alleges the Giudices lied to the bankruptcy court, to the IRS and to a number of banks,” U.S. Attorney Fishman told Fox News. “Everyone has an obligation to tell the truth when dealing with the courts, paying their taxes and applying for loans or mortgages. That’s reality.”
Teresa, her husband Joe and their four daughters have been appearing on The Real Housewives of New Jersey since 2009. The family filed for bankruptcy in 2009 and Joe is already facing fraud charges after illegally obtaining a false driver’s license. His license had previously been suspended after he was convicted of a DUI.
Teresa’s attorney commented today that they are planning on pleading not guilty and that “we look forward to vindicating her.”
Teresa also issued her own statement saying, “today is a most difficult day for our family” but she supports her husband and plans to continue on with her career.
