With the announcement that Nina Dobrev is returning to The Vampire Diaries, at least for the final episode of the series, it is clear that fans with be seeing Elena Gilbert once again and getting an answer to the longstanding question: should Elena be with Damon or Stefan? But with Elena comes her past, and that has us wondering, will Katherine Pierce make an appearance, too? And should she?
The Beginning
The Vampire Diaries started with Katherine, and it should end with her too. Sure, you could say that it began with Stefan and Elena, but Stefan would’ve never have been drawn to Elena if he hadn’t had his past with Katherine. The draw to Elena for both Salvatore brothers was her appearance; she looked exactly like the girl that they both loved in 1864.

The photo of Katherine that Stefan held onto was the first rift in Elena’s relationship with him. She hadn’t known that was the reason Stefan was so drawn to her, at least at first, and it was an important moment for the duo. Even when she wasn’t around, Katherine was coming in between the Salvatore brothers and their love for Elena. She became just as important to the story as Elena.
Her Death
Katherine Pierce died a broken, fragile mess. After having the cure for vampirism shoved down her throat, the effects began to take place, and Katherine Pierce slowly grew into an old woman in season 5 of The Vampire Diaries.
Katherine became desperate to cling to her life, which wasn’t out of character for her. She always did what she could to survive, which is why she became a vampire in the first place. Running from the Original vampires made Katherine that much more inclined to survive, and when she finally lost her advantage, she used her charm and wit to try to stay alive. Unfortunately, she had already lost any hope of relying on anyone in Mystic Falls to survive.

Her rivalry with Elena, not just about the Salvatore brothers but in general, helped the series thrive, especially in seasons 4 and 5 as Katherine returned to town after Elena had become a vampire. They were finally evenly matched, and Elena had quite a bit of aggression to take out on Katherine, too. But their rivalry basically boils down to the way Katherine went out. When her body had finally given out, Katherine had her consciousness placed in Elena’s body, and she planned to use magic to get rid of Elena for good and have Stefan for herself. As we saw, though, her plan failed, and she was literally dragged to hell.
Should She Return?
Katherine has always played an instrumental role in the lives of Mystic Falls’ residents, and it wouldn’t be right if we didn’t hear from the Queen of Evil before the series ends. The story began with the Salvatores’ love for Katherine, and while they might not love her (or regard her with any affection) anymore, that has to count for something, doesn’t it?
Also, the series just hasn’t been the same without her maniacal and evil plans. And her snarky remarks.
