I’m starting to wonder if Tom Welling is destined for a career as a director after Smallville wraps up in the next couple of years.  Unlike many television actors, Welling doesn’t seem all that interested in pursuing movies or other acting gigs while his series is between seasons.  He’s also spent some time behind the camera while on Smallville, having directed two episodes of the series in the first six seasons.  Welling’s third outing in the director’s chair, “Apocalypse,” airs this Thursday on the CW.  The 150th episode of the series finds Jor-El showing Clark what life would be like if he had never arrived on Earth.

To get fans ready for “Apocalypse,” we have some promo pictures, a trailer, and a behind-the-scenes look at the episode.

The official CW description of the Smallville event reads, “Clark discovers that Kara (Laura Vandervoort) sent messages from Krypton in the past that indicate that Brainiac wants to kill Baby Kal-El so Clark will not exist in the future.  Clark is torn because he thinks the world would be better off if he had never arrived in Smallville.  Jor-El arranges for him to see what life would have been like if Clark hadn’t existed – Lex is President of the United States, Kara is raised by the Luthors, Jonathan (John Schneider) is alive, Lana (Kristin Kreuk) is happily married and Chloe (Allison Mack) and Lois (Erica Durance) are ace reporters.

The first photo from the episode shows President Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) making a speech while Brainiac stands in the background.  Lex Luthor managed to become president in the DC Comics, so this isn’t such a far-fetched evolution for his character.

If Clark never landed on Earth in this alternate future, what is he doing in this photo?  He’s looking just like the grown up version of Clark that we all know from the movies and comics.

This trailer for the episode lays out the premise and shows many of the characters in danger:

This quick behind-the-scenes look at “Apocalypse” has interviews with some of the actors. Beware that it also contains a vague spoiler for an event that will happen sometime later this season.

The 150th episode of Smallville airs Thursday at 8pm on the CW.
