There is no doubt that Mia Michaels and Wade Robson are talented choreographers. Both have made their mark in the dance world. Now, the two can add Emmy winners onto their resumes. Over the weekend, the 59th Annual Creative Arts Emmy Awards took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. So You Think You Dance choreographers Mia Michaels and Wade Robson walked away winners. In the Outstanding Choreography category, where there is a possibility of more than one winner, Robson won for his piece, “Ramalama (Bang Bang)” and Michaels won for hers, “Calling You”.
Both pieces were from season 2 of the show and both were definite highlights. Robson’s “Ramalama” piece was originally performed by the top 9 dancers and became so popular, producers brought it back for the finale, where all top 20 dancers performed it. In season 2, the top 10 dancers included Donyelle Jones, Dmitry Chaplin, Allison Holker, and of course, winner Benji Schwimmer.
Mia Michaels’ piece, “Calling You”, became known to fans of So You Think You Can Dance as “the bench piece” or “the sunflower piece”. It was danced by final four contestants Travis Wall and Heidi Groskreutz. This performance was also so popular that it was brought back for the live finale. At the time of the original performance, the judges raved, calling it sensational and fabulous.
The 2 Emmy Awards are just an addition to the large success So You Think You Can Dance has already enjoyed. The show has been renewed for a fourth season, airing next summer. The top 10 dancers of the season are embarking on a nationwide tour, which has already sold out in many cities.
Mia Michaels has previously choreographed for stage shows such as Cirque de Soleil as well as Celine Dion’s “A New Day” Las Vegas show. Wade Robson has been dancing his whole life and has previously choreographed for film, television, and pop music acts. Before So You Think You Can Dance, he has his own dance competition show, The Wade Robson Project.
