It’s once again time to climb aboard the hottest dance train, well, probably ever! So You Think You Can Dance may have some surprises in store as we see the top 20 dance again before two dancers are sent home. All I know for sure is that we are in for some incredible dancing, and that Cat Deeley will wear something fetching.
The first night of eliminations is definitely sad because no one wants to be sent home this soon. All the hard work and anticipation has been building for weeks, and now we must bid farewell to two talented performers. I’m not ready yet — are you? Did your favorite dancers do enough to stay on, or will they be sent packing?
Grab some tissues, and buckle up, people!
This is the So You Think You Can Dance live blog:
We begin with a group dance, which is oddly creepy with the dancers looking like dolls and brides. Cat Deeley introduces it in dramatic fashion. There is a rocking chair and a bed on stage. This opening number is choreographed by Tyce Diorio.
Here are the JUDGES! Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy are joined by Christina Applegate. Cat’s wearing an elegant ensemble and, once again, not sparkly.
Here we go with the results: Wow!
The Bottom 6 Dancers
Makenzie Dustman
Alan Bersten
Mariah Spears
Jade Zuberi
Brittany Cherry
Carlos Garland
The judges will select one male and female dancer to send to safety. Nigel points out that the eliminated dancers will still dance with their partners later. Mariah, Carlos, Jade and Brittany will dance for their lives later in the show.

Makenzie Dustman
Alan Bersten
Solos
Mariah Spears performs her solo first and has plenty of swag and energy. Carlos is next and his performance seems a bit lackluster. Brittany performs a seductive solo with tons of energy. Finally, Jade dances for his competitive life. His performance is amazing!
Now for the judge’s decision, which is also based on input from the choreographers. Nigel is disappointed in all the solos.

Jade Zuberi
Way to mix it up and have the eliminations first. Once again, Mariah Spears and Jade Zuberi are safe and continuing on So You Think You Can Dance.
Hayley Erbert and Curtis Holland
Jazz choreographed by Ray Leeper
This performance is steamy! It showcases their chemistry well. I think Nigel needs a cold shower since he admittedly is focusing on Hayley. Mary Murphy loves it and tells Curtis that he is “a giggle bucket.” (Yes, really!)
Jasmine Harper and Aaron Turner
Lyrical Hip-Hop choreographed by Nappy-Tabs
For some reason, I am not feeling a connection between the dancers and the performance. Mary Murphy likes their chemistry and thinks that they are sexy. Christina Applegate feels that they are the couple to beat. Nigel also enjoys it. Nappy-Tabs has also created a hip-hop master class for National Dance Day on Saturday, July 27. So get ready!
Malece Miller and Jade Zuberi
Bollywood choreographed by Nakul Dev Mahajan
Malece and Jade dance an energetic and entertaining number that I really enjoy. Christina Applegate gives Jade a pep talk and tells him that he needs to work harder than the other dancers. Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy like it even though they think Malece and Jade’s dancing needs to be technically correct.
Alexis Juliano and Nico Greetham
Contemporary choreographed by Stacy Tookey
Tookey’s routine is about a female soldier returning from war. This is an emotional piece, and I think that Alexis really shines in it. It is one of my favorite dances of the night. Mary Murphy and Christina Applegate are complimentary, while Nigel tells Alexis that she must work a little harder.
Brittany Cherry and Dorian “Blu-Print” Hector
Broadway choreographed by Spencer Liff
Brittany is leaving the show tonight but dances on to support her partner, Blu-Print. The dance is set in a library and makes use of many props, such as a table and book shelves. It is intricate, yet breezy and fun. Mary Murphy tells Blu-Print that he needs to work harder. Nigel Lythgoe wants BluPrint to sell the routine more. Tough love tonight all around!
Jasmine Mason and Alan Bersten
Tango choreographed by Miriam and Leonardo
This performance is moody and sensual. It is my favorite dance so far. Jasmine and Alan get raves all around, and Nigel wonders how Alan found himself in the bottom six dancers.
Makenzie Dustman and Paul Karmiryan
Jazz choreographed by Sean Cheesman
This dance is about a mad scientist who creates a female robot. It is dramatic and sexy, and the audience goes wild! Makenzie steals the routine with her star quality, and Mary Murphy calls her “a dance diva without the attitude.”
Mariah Spears and Carlos Garland
Contemporary choreographed by Stacey Tookey
This dance is about a man who loses his memory in an accident and how that alters their relationship. The performance is both moving and elegant. Carlos is leaving the show tonight, but gives an incredible performance. Mariah really stands out, and gives Christina “goose bumps.”
Amy Yakima and DuShaunt “Fik-Shun” Stegall
Hip-Hop choreographed by Nappy-Tabs
Part of the dance happens on a luggage cart. Color me impressed! Amy and Fik-Shun are hip-hop bell-hops and have great chemistry. It is the most entertaining routine so far, in my opinion. Nigel predicts that they will be in the finale if they continue dancing this way.
Jenna Johnson and Tucker Knox
Cha-Cha choreographed by Dmitri Chaplin
This dance is smoldering! Mary Murphy thinks that Tucker needs to kick it up a notch. Nigel Lythgoe doesn’t think that there was enough cha-cha content and blames the choreographer. (Snap!)
What a great night of performances, and quite a few surprises. This first night of eliminations sees us bidding farewell to Brittany Cherry and Carlos Garland. Get ready and vote to save your favorite dancers! Next week, the bottom three male and female dancers will be in jeopardy once again.
