If there’s one thing I’ve learned on Sons of Anarchy, it’s that family always comes first in the world of SAMCRO. A lot of salt may have been added to Jax and Clay’s wounds this season but the beef between these leather clad men has been put aside the moment Gemma came clean about her rape, and ultimately, when little Abel was abducted by Cameron.
“There was something fascinating about finding some organic way to put the family in a crisis that they’ve never been in before,” series creator Kurt Sutter tells TVGuide.com. “You can see the look on Jax’s face, the look on Clay’s face, that what has happened to Abel is not in any of their handbooks. This season has been about trust and loyalty and testing those loyalties and ultimately bringing that all to a head.
“Ultimately, when a brother says, ‘I need you,’ everything else takes a back seat. Whether it’s vengeance, whether it’s money…everything else falls away,” Sutter adds. “The wounds right now between Jax and Clay are put aside to deal with the crisis at hand, but those wounds will always be present and there will be times in the series when those scabs will be ripped open. But brotherhood and family is more important than that vengeance.”
But the kidnapping of baby Abel is just one of the losses Sons of Anarchy endured in its sophomore season. In the 90-minute finale alone, SAMCRO lost Half Sack, Weston was killed, Agent Stahl killed Cameron’s son Edmond, and Gemma killed Zobelle’s daughter Polly— which basically paves the way for promising storyline for season 3 now that the SAMCRO matriarch has been set up by Agent Stahl to take the fall her mistake and is now headed out of town with partner-in-crime Unser.
While Gemma’s life on the run will obviously be explored next season, Sutter reveals that season 3 will also deal with SAMCRO’s roots.
“Next season we will perhaps learn some more history of the Teller family,” Sutter says. “I’m fascinated by the mythology of the club, and when I have an opportunity to organically reveal those bits and pieces, it’s fun for me. And I think the fans really enjoy being able to get that information and put those pieces together.”
