Anime Expo 2023 brought exciting news for DC and anime fans by announcing a new Isekai anime series, Suicide Squad Isekai. The acclaimed WIT Studio produces this groundbreaking series in collaboration with Warner Bros. Japan is set to bring beloved characters from DC Comics Suicide Squad into a new animated realm.
Eri Osada, celebrated for her work as Jujutsu Kaisen’s chief animation director, is steering the helm of this highly anticipated project. Osada is joined by character design leads Akira Amano, recognized for their work on Psycho-Pass, and Naoto Hosoda. The screenplay will be crafted by Tappei Nagatsuki and Eiji Umehara, both known for their remarkable job on the original anime series Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song.
The Suicide Squad, a DC Comics series modernized by John Ostrander, has significantly impacted pop culture, with its comic book series and two blockbuster movies raking in a combined total of $914 million worldwide. This new venture in the form of an Isekai anime intends to add another feather to its cap.
The term “Isekai” refers to a sub-genre of anime that sees characters transported into a foreign world, providing limitless creative possibilities. A released teaser showcased stylized 2D visuals with Harley Quinn and Joker causing chaos in Gotham before transitioning to a fantastical world brimming with enormous dragons and gargantuan pig mutants. It’s a promise of the unexpected and the extraordinary that’s synonymous with the Isekai genre.
Excitement was palpable as the audience at Anime Expo 2023 received the first look at the project, courtesy of WIT Studio and Warner Bros. Japan. The creators of renowned anime series like Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga, and Spy x Family, WIT Studio, is no stranger to delivering successful projects. Furthermore, they have a significant release, “Moonrise,” lined up for Netflix in 2024.
WIT Studio, founded in 2012 as a subsidiary under IG Port, a merger of Production I.G. and Mag Garden, has a distinct individuality, as emphasized by its CEO, George Wada. He stated, “These two anime studios are two very distinct companies. So, I would like to take advantage of the unique characteristics of these two companies to increase the number of anime fans out there and to have them enjoy the works we create.”
Similarly, since its establishment in 1992, Warner Bros. Japan has given life to well-known anime series like Mob Psycho 100, Food Wars!, and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. Their collaboration with WIT Studio on this unique Isekai project promises an exciting adventure for Suicide Squad fans and anime enthusiasts globally.
Suicide Squad Isekai remains unconnected to James Gunn and Peter Safran‘s upcoming DC reboot. Still, WIT Studio CEO George Wada jokingly urged the audience to convince Gunn to watch the show. Fans can look forward to a wholly unique iteration of Joker and Harley Quinn, as assured by director Eri Osada, who promised, “We ultimately decided to not copy any particular iteration and have something completely unique.”
With a wealth of talent behind its creation, Suicide Squad Isekai is set to captivate audiences, presenting a new interpretation of popular DC characters as they plunge into the vibrant and unpredictable world of Isekai.
