The boys of Supernatural are relatively low tech, using shotguns and blunt instruments to fight. But in season 7, they’re going to be needing a little help in the computer department.
According to Zap2It, the upcoming season’s sixth episode will feature a new “mad computer genius” named Frank Dvereaux, an old friend of Bobby’s who’s brought in to help with a case. British actor Kevin McNally has been cast in the role.
In the past, Sam and Dean would’ve used Ash, but since he’s busy in Roadhouse Heaven, the Winchesters need someone new. If I had to guess, I’d say Frank’s days are numbered, as almost all of Bobby’s old pals die when they start helping. Just look at Ellen, Rufus or Dr. Visyak.
More disturbing, however, is the fact that the episode is currently titled “Slash Fiction.” As in Sam slash Dean. Together.
The title suggests that the Supernatural fandom will once again make an appearance on the show. It was first introduced in season 4’s “The Monster at the End of This Book” when Sam and Dean learned their lives were chronicled in a series of books called Supernatural, which had a very small but vocal fan community online. Super fan Becky Rosen was introduced later and revealed she’s fond of writing slash fiction while the special Supernatural convention episode in season 5 had a panel about the homoerotic subtext between the brothers.
In other words, the sixth episode is likely to feature more meta commentary about Supernatural, and while I doubt it will reach the level of “The French Mistake,” it should offer plenty of opportunities for comedy.
Supernatural‘s seventh season begins Friday, September 23 at 9pm on the CW.
