Cliffhangers aside, the Supernatural‘s hell-atus just became intensely unbearable. Titles for the first nine episodes of season 13 hit the internet, scratching that spoiler itch with the promise of some major answers.
Interspersed with a few clever puns and pop culture references, the titles initially appear innocuous. Nevertheless, at least four give us exciting insight into where Supernatural season 13 will go.
As per Spoiler TV, the episodes are as follows:
Episode 1: “Lost and Found”
Episode 2: “The Rising Sun”
Episode 3: “Patience”
Episode 4: “The Big Empty”
Episode 5: “Advanced Thanatology”
Episode 6: “Tombstone”
Episode 7: “War of the Worlds”
Episode 8: “The Scorpion and the Frog”
Episode 9: “The Bad Place”
Who Is the Real Baddie of Supernatural Season 13?>>>
Let’s kick off this analysis with episode 3. Bearing the name “Patience,” the third hour will serve to introduce the daughter of an old familiar face. Missouri Moseley used her psychic powers to guide the Winchester brothers over a decade ago, and now Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) will cross paths with her granddaughter, the eponymous Patience. According to TVLine, the young seer will fold into Supernatural’s “Wayward Sisters” spin-off.
Episode 4, meanwhile, brings an ominous sense of foreboding. Billie the reaper first introduced the idea of “The Big Empty” back in season 11 and, despite its laughable name, the concept of a permanent death chilled our heroes to the bone. Someplace beyond heaven, hell, or purgatory, the Big Empty remains a threat despite Castiel’s (Misha Collins) efforts to mitigate the situation.
When it comes to “War of the Worlds,” it doesn’t take much imagination to realize the writer’s aren’t planning an H.G. Wells-style invasion. Aliens aren’t a threat in Supernatural canon (just one of the major stumbling blocks in the campaign for an Arrow/Supernatural crossover), but alternate universes certainly are. Perhaps Mary (Samantha Smith) and Lucifer’s (Mark Pellegrino) one-way tickets to Apocalypse World will be replaced with round trip fare sooner than expected. That is, of course, assuming Jack (Alexander Calvert) has his mother’s heart of gold.

It’s that unpredictable hell spawn that brings us to our last teaser. Sired by Lucifer, the Nephilim is an unknown quantity. It’s nature vs. nurture on a dangerous scale, moderated by icons of dysfunction with daddy issues of their own. If the title of episode 8 refers to Jack, it could signal a failure tantamount to nuclear war. As the fable goes, the scorpion can’t change its venomous ways, even if that ensures its own self-destruction.
