Death is only the beginning — if you’re on Supernatural, that is. It’s a truth as immutable as the Word of God, a legacy as indestructible as the First Blade and a trope the indomitable CW series will give a whole new spin to in season 13.
Supernatural will dust off its impressive roster as Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) reckon with an alternative universe, and the fandom is buzzing with anticipation. There’s one caveat, however — you shouldn’t expect to see many familiar faces amongst the crowd.
You might get Meg, you might get Michael, but you won’t get the men and woman who originated the roles.

“Even if it’s not played by an actor that we recognize, there are certain characters that are going to come back in different bodies,” showrunner Andrew Dabb previewed, as per TVLine.
It’s a teaser that might have a few fans bummed, but it’s also one that gives us a solid hint at which type of wayward characters Supernatural might welcome back into the fold. Angels and demons, of course. After all, who else can switch bodies with impunity?
So, which of these immoral, unconscionable creatures will grace the Winchesters with their pithy wit and enmity? Let’s dive into the rogues’ gallery of heaven and hell.
Angels
With the end times looming large in apocalypse-world, we can expect the heavy hitters to be out in force. Lucifer and Michael, the harbingers of disaster, will have a chance to tango once more. Without Sam and Dean to use as meat suits — and presuming Mark Pellegrino’s Luci isn’t the only Satan in the game — the duo will need new vessels. Too bad Adam isn’t kicking around that sandblasted excuse for an earth.
Castiel, meanwhile, could also appear sans Misha Collins. The real Castiel, the one we’ve spent nine seasons getting to know and love, will return eventually, but in the meantime, an entirely different iteration of the tree-topper could be playing the good soldier in Mary’s (Samantha Smith) new world.
Just know that if they bring back Gabriel with anyone other than Richard Speight, I will riot. That’s all I have to say on that matter.
Demons
With the death of Crowley, Supernatural lost every demon of consequence in the real world. Did Mark Sheppard‘s character momentarily exist contemporaneously with his alternate-universe self? What about Meg? Chuck help us all if Ruby and Lilith are around — no one needs that level of evil in an already tarnished landscape. They would, however, be preferable to Abaddon. Alistair would make an interesting addition to the battle, but with Sam and Dean momentarily cut off from this narrative, only Azazel would really pack an emotional punch.

Supernatural used season 12 to prove its advancing age provides an excellent chance to expand on the prior mythos. Now, let’s see if the writers can keep pulling on those plot strings with considered calculation.
