Supernatural shifted into its mythological overdrive tonight, finally revealing the anatomy of its endgame. After last night, the course of Supernatural is set on an entirely new path. Is it safe to assume our brothers grim will emerge from this milieu intact? After yesterday’s startling revelations, how will Season Two come to a close, and what will season three hold for Supernatural fans. Read on for a few tidbits.
The teaser from from TheCW couldn’t be more morbid: Dean must deal with the aftermath of the fight between Sam and Jake (guest star Aldis Hodge) and pays a steep price for his involvement. The Demon and his spirits threaten to overtake the hunters until they receive help from an unexpected ally.
A snazzy little bit of marketing to lead you to believe that somebody is going to die, but don’t worry. In their zeal to discuss the epic adventure that awaits in season three of Supernatural, the shows own producers have already stated, in loose terms, that the brothers Winchester will still be alive and kicking in season three.
Robert Singer told Ifilm that “Season three is in many ways about them fighting this war. The value of that mythology is we don’t have to get so wrapped up in bicentennial levels of complexity and mythology; it can just be a war has begun. War can take many different, painful for the guys and fun for the audience, forms.”
Now granted, there have been some tangential characters along the way that could be considered waiting replacements for either brother, but why shift your base when you’re finally kicking into the big story? Of course the really exciting thing is that the dodging that went on all through season two of Supernatural, avoiding giving too much of the mythos up, will not be so easily done next season. All indications are that the producers are looking at more episodes dedicated to the overarching story and fewer diversionary episodes.
In my opinion, this is all good. The show has always seemed to have a more defined sense of self when dealing with the overarching story, and more of a inferior Kolchak meet Twilight Zone pastiche when not.
Will there even be a third season? So far, the series has not officially been renewed. There are rumors that the third season has been greenlit, but TheCW won’t make an official announcement until their up-fronts next week.
