The CW is already making plans for the 2014-2015 season with the announcement of five official renewals. Supernatural, The Vampires Diaries, Arrow, as well as freshman dramas The Originals and Reign, have all been renewed for next year.
The news is hardly a surprise, especially for the network’s biggest and highest-rated shows. Supernatural is still going strong and will enter its 10th season next year, at which point it will celebrate its 200th episode early in the year.
Arrow will return for season 3 and continues to be the network’s most-watched show. The Vampire Diaries, still getting good ratings and even being competitive with other networks on Thursdays, will return for season 6.
As for the first-year shows, early renewals are great news for both The Originals and Reign. Their successes are quite different, with The Originals proving that there’s viability for the CW in spin-offs (good news for The Flash and Supernatural: Tribes, two pilots currently in consideration). Meanwhile, Reign‘s popularity means the CW can branch out as a royal period piece doesn’t exactly fit the sci-fi/fantasy mold of most of the network’s shows.
There’s still no word on Hart of Dixie, The Carrie Diaries, Beauty and the Beast or The Tomorrow People, but they could all be in the running for next season along with six new shows in development.
