Kelly Kapoor (Mindy Kaling) started out as a character that seemingly didn’t have any outstanding traits in The Office. After several episodes, however, this Indian American customer service representative has officially become the office chatterbox with unparallel expertise on clothes, boys, dating and celebrity gossip. As someone with a bubbly persona with juvenile tendencies, Kelly has added her “spicy curry” charm into almost every episode of The Office, whether through her on-again and off-again romance with Ryan (B. J. Novak) or her hilarious one-liners. Not surprisingly, she has also attracted a rapidly increasing fanbase next to the major players of the show.
In the most recent two-part episode of The Office, we got a huge dose of Kelly as she chastises the party planning committee, particularly Jim and Dwight (Rainn Wilson), for forgetting her birthday. So as a tribute the girl who “can’t wait to get pregnant and have babies,” I’ve decided to list down the most noteworthy Kelly Kapoor scenes in The Office.
Trash Talk vs. Smack Talk
When Jim and warehouse foreman Darryl Philbin (Craig Robinson) engage in a little ping pong match in “The Deposition,” Kelly, who’s dating Darryl, gloats to Jim’s girlfriend Pam (Jenna Fischer) over her boyfriend’s superior skills. Kelly continues taunting Pam for the rest of the episode and even becomes confrontational but denies that she’s talking trash by saying “I don’t talk trash. I talk smack. They’re totally different. Trash talk is all hypothetical like ‘Your Mama’s so fat she could eat the internet’ but smack talk is happening like right now, like ‘you’re ugly and I know it for a fact cause I got the evidence right there.’” It’s even funnier when Kelly mocks Pam’s boyfriend to the tune of Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend.”
Pink, Beyonce and Hot Dogs
In “The Carpet,” someone leaves a disgusting substance on the carpet of Michael’s (Steve Carell) office so he spends the day at Jim’s desk, transferring Jim at the back room with Kelly, who tends to engage in long-winded, one-sided conversations on relatively trivial subjects. Much to the chagrin of Jim, Kelly tells him that she likes Beyonce, pink (the color), Pink (the singer), hot dogs, and snowcones, and then later begs him to “please please please please” set him up with Ryan.
Valentine’s Day
An episode that proves just how side-splittingly dense and immature Kelly can be is the episode “Valentine’s Day,” where Jim (John Krasinski) regrettably starts a conversation with Kelly, who stars talking about how she finally hooked up with Ryan just before Valentine’s Day. Kelly, without interruption, says “It was so funny because we were at this bar with his friends and I was sitting next to him the whole night. And he wasn’t making a move. So In my head I was like ‘Ryan what’s taking you so long.’ And then he kissed me. And I didn’t know what to say. So I said ‘Ryan what took you so long.’ And I just said it to him. Can you believe that? Oh my God is that embarrassing? I’m embarrassed…but now I have a boyfriend.” It’s Kelly at one of her most chatty moods and seeing Jim suffering and trying to gradually wriggle his way out of the conversation and out of the pantry was just priceless.
2 Minutes and 42 Seconds
That’s apparently how long Kelly can sustain a one-sided conversation when talking about Neflix. In “Safety Training,” Ryan is watching his watch as Kelly is talking in front of him while the rest of the office employees observe their conversation. Kelly says “So then the next movie moves to the top of the queue. So number five becomes number four. Number six becomes number five. Number three becomes number two. Etcetera, etcetera. And let’s just say that I just sent back Love Actually, which was awesome. And they sent me Uptown Girls, which is also awesome. But guess what? Now I want to see Love Actually again. But it’s at the bottom of the queue! Oh no, what’ll I do? What I do is this. I go online, I go ‘click, click, click,’ and I change the order of the queue so that I can see Love Actually as soon as I want to. It’s so easy, Ryan. Do you really not know how Netflix works?” Of course, Ryan wins the bet for hitting the exact time though Pam wins $10 because Kelly said “awesome” 12 times and Jim wins $5 because Kelly mentioned six romantic comedies.
