The world has lost one of television’s most iconic actors with reports that James Gandolfini has died at the age of 51. The Sopranos star was in Italy for a film festival and he appears to have suffered a fatal heart attack.
Gandolfini is best known as Tony Soprano, the Jersey mob boss from HBO’s critically acclaimed The Sopranos. He won three Emmys, one Golden Globe and five SAG Awards for the role among many other awards.
His first big role came in the 1993 film True Romance as a henchmen who brutally interrogated Patricia Arquette’s character.
More recently he appeared in the Oscar-winning film Zero Dark Thirty and less than a month ago he had a cameo in the Nickelodeon TV movie Nicky Deuce, along with many other Sopranos alums.
Gandolfini was set to star in a seven-episode limited series on HBO titled Criminal Justice, an adaptation of a British series following one person’s journey through the justice system.
The actor is survived by his wife and two children.
