It didn’t come as a shock to me when I heard the New Moon trailer broke a ton of records. I watched it at least 10 times within the first 24 hours although I only watched it online once. MTV and Myspace saw 10.6 million views within the first week of the trailer release. The numbers are absolutely astronomical for a theatrical trailer, let alone a rushed (come on, that’s what it was) teaser trailer.
MySpace had 4.2 million views within the first 24 hours the trailer was released online. That’s over half of the 7.8 million streams counted for the first seven days. I saw the MySpace trailer widget embedded everywhere so I know not every stream was counted by people who viewed the trailer on www.myspace.com, but those numbers are still huge.
Following the MTV Movie Awards last Sunday, MTV.com’s streamed 5.3 million views within the first 24 hours and another 2.8 million streams to wrap up the week. Obviously this doesn’t mean 10.6 million people saw the trailer because of die-hard fans who watched multiple times (like me), but there’s no doubting the wildfire that is the New Moon hype.
People were excited for Twilight and it opened with $70.5 million dollar weekend. I’m guessing New Moon will break triple digits if Chris Weitz doesn’t anger the fans. Initial reactions have been mostly positive across the board. Twilight fans are used to not seeing every piece of the novel in the book considering all that was left out of the first movie, so I’m guessing nothing can stop New Moon‘s eminent success.
What did you think of the New Moon Trailer? Did you agree with my analysis? How many times did you contribute to the record-breaking numbers?
