Ready for some more flashbacks? That’s what’s coming up in The Vampire Diaries‘ “Age of Innocence,” and this look back is going to show what happened in the year 1863.
In this episode, Damon sets off on a road trip with Bonnie and Alaric in search of leverage they can use against his mother — namely, the one heretic who isn’t with the rest in Mystic Falls. Meanwhile, Caroline continues to be held hostage by the heretics, and she learns shocking information about Valerie’s past — turns out she and Stefan knew each other — while Stefan learns some unexpected details about his own past from his mother.

Watch the promo for “Age of Innocence”:
So, Alaric may not have destroyed the phoenix stone, but with the warning, “mess with it and you end up dead,” that’s something they should get on doing ASAP. But Damon has more important things (in his mind anyway) to concern himself about than that stone. Will Damon be able to make a deal with Lily for Elena’s body?
Check out a sneak peek as Lily drops a truth bomb on Stefan:
“You need to tell those spoiled brats living in my house to stop torturing Caroline,” Stefan demands of his mother and when he tells her that he and Damon aren’t talking and he has no idea where he is, she agrees to talk to the girls. Oh, and about those girls, is one of them Valerie? Yes, and in fact, Lily knew Valerie before Stefan did and sent her to him.
The Vampire Diaries: Can the Show Survive without Elena?>>>
Watch executive producers Julie Plec and Caroline Dries preview what to expect in this TVD episode:
“Damon is extremely intent” on getting Elena’s body back from Lily, Plec explains, and to that end, he’s planning to find the missing heretic, Oscar, and stage a hostage swap. But Oscar may not be what you expect from a heretic, and Tim Kang is going to be around for a few episodes in the role as they show his life post-prison world and without the influence of Lily and the rest of the heretics.
“We start to understand as Valerie’s relationship with Stefan unfolds why she put this spell on Caroline that prohibits Stefan from touching her without being burned like her skin is vervain, so we start to understand Valerie has an agenda,” Dries previews. And according to Valerie, she “wasn’t just some girl” to Stefan.

Expect this episode to explain “who Valerie is, what she was to Stefan, how they met, what tore them apart, and what lingering impact she has on his life and will have in his world moving forward,” Plec teases.

If it’s on TV — especially if it’s a procedural or superhero show — chances are Meredith watches it. She has a love for all things fiction, starting from a young age with ER and The X-Files on the small screen and the Nancy Drew books. Arrow kicked off the Arrowverse and her true passion for all things heroes. She’s enjoyed getting into the minds of serial killers since Criminal Minds, so it should be no surprise that her latest obsession is Prodigal Son.
