Described as part X-Files, part Fringe plus a dose of Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark, Warehouse 13 is a brand new “thrilleromedy” from the newly rebranded Syfy network set to premiere tonight 9pm.
Centered in a mysterious, quasi-government facility in South Dakota that houses all the magical, mystical, and potentially dangerous artifacts you can imagine, Warehouse 13 features a he says, she says duo of FBI agents Pete (Eddie McClintock) and Myka (Joanne Kelly) who are tasked to “locate, recover, and deactivate” anything from the mystic warehouse that looks like it’s acting up. This, after the two saves the president’s life during a visit to the Museum of Natural History where a blood-leaking idol causes a lab technician to become a zombie. CCH Pounder, finally, plays Mrs. Frederic, the director of the secret government organization that oversees it all.
Warehouse 13 is SyFy’s attempt to capture a younger and more female audience, an effort that started out in the charming dramedy Eureka, which is set to continue its third season on Friday and, during its debut, achieved the highest-rated debut in the network’s history.
“We were looking for an audience a little more female, a little younger, but also something with mass appeal that would be a good companion to Eureka,” says programming executive Mark Stern, adding that Warehouse 13 marks its departure for die-hard sci-fi fans’ usual typical dark dramas, including the recently departed Battlestar Galactica. The pilot of Warehouse 13, coincidentally, was penned by Battlestar Galactica co-executive producer Jane Espenson.
“We’re walking a tightrope between humor and thriller. I hope that keeps the audience off balance and entertained,” adds Saul Rubinek, who plays warehouse caretaker Artie Nielsen.
