There are some television shows that I simply can’t imagine as big screen motion pictures. For example, I have no idea what could happen in a Lost movie, and though they’ve been kicking around the idea of a 24 feature film for years, I just can’t picture it. However, some television shows such as Firefly and The X-Files have made wonderful transitions to the big screen. These shows have been able to make the leap successfully because they have strong characters and are easy to adapt into standalone adventures. Much like its inspiration The X-Files, I think Supernatural would work perfectly as an action packed, feature length extravaganza. If the Winchesters ever did get the chance to make it to theaters, what kind of butt-kicking action would we want to see?
Before I start my drive down the imagination highway, let me point out that the chances of a Supernatural movie happening are minimal. A cult show like Firefly becoming a movie was a fluke in the Hollywood system, and unfortunately it was a fluke that didn’t rake in hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office. The chances of a studio taking another gamble on a cult show like Supernatural are pretty slim. However, that doesn’t mean I can’t dream, so dream I will.
One of the things I love most about Supernatural is how creator Eric Kripke constantly pushes the boundaries of what you can see on network television. The show has a surprising amount of blood, gore, and scares for something that airs on the CW. Being the gore lover that I am, I would of course want Supernatural: The Movie to be rated R. I want Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) to be able to chop off heads and blow demons away without adhering to any sort of ratings censorship.
It would also be essential for the entire cast to be involved, including Jeffrey Dean Morgan as John Winchester. I don’t know how they’d work him in, but there’s always the chance for a prologue or a flashback or something. If a Supernatural movie was going to exist, I would demand it feature the boys, Ruby (Katie Cassidy), Bela (Lauren Cohan), John, Bobby, Jo, Meg, Ellen, and whoever else could fit into the narrative.
Speaking of the narrative, there would have to be one gigantic, apocalyptic problem for the Winchesters to face. They could cast some big time star (to help with the box office gross) as a charismatic demon leader and have an army of monsters out to annihilate the world. Of course, it’d be best not to tie it in heavily to the mythology of the series. The movie would need to bring in a lot more viewers than the three million who watch the show if it wanted to make any money.
Another great aspect of a Supernatural movie would be the fact that the production could travel all over the United States instead of being confined solely to Vancouver. Perhaps an even better idea is to send the Winchester boys to Europe and have them face off with baddies in a completely foreign culture. Then again, that could always be saved for the sequel.
Though it’s all wishful thinking, the possibilities for a Supernatural movie are truly endless. What would you want to see if the demon hunting brothers made it to the big screen?
