True Blood stars Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer recently announced that they are expecting their first child this fall.
Will this affect True Blood? Real-life pregnancies can also result in changes to TV shows. Most recently, Emily Deschanel‘s pregnancy being written into Bones comes to mind. But HBO’s True Blood is a bit of a different story.
There’s a good chance the show will simply work around the pregnancy. The timing couldn’t be more perfect. Production on season 5 began in November and is expected to end in June or July. In all likelihood, Paquin will be 4-6 months pregnant while filming the final episodes. That could easily be worked around with costumes and camera angles. Of course, it also means the number of Sookie sex scenes will probably be a lot smaller.
The timing could also work for the show’s possible renewal. If True Blood is picked up for a sixth season, it would probably only delay production by a few months and the show could presumably stick to its schedule of airing every summer.
However, True Blood could also decide that Paquin’s pregnancy would make a great storyline for the show. Sure, a woman and a vampire having a baby is a little too Twilight, but who says the baby has to be a vampire’s? Sookie’s romantic life has always been complicated with Bill, Eric and werewolf Alcide vying for her affection, and an unplanned pregnancy would keep the romantic drama going.
